Organist Carrie Groenewold to perform at Dordt College

February 7, 2014

Dordt College Alumna Carrie (Spronk, ’06) Groenewold will give an organ recital on Saturday, February 22, at 7:30 p.m. The performance will be in the B.J. Haan Auditorium, showcasing the college’s magnificent 57-rank, three-manual mechanical action Casavant pipe organ.

Groenewold is the second performer in the Joan Ringerwole Organ Series at Dordt College, a five-year series that will bring nationally-acclaimed organists to campus each year. This series is initiated and funded by Joan Ringerwole, Dordt College professor of music emerita.

Having begun her organ studies with Dr. Ringerwole in grade school, Groenewold continued studying with her at Dordt College, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in organ performance and church music. She now holds a master’s degree in sacred music from the University of Notre Dame and a doctorate of musical arts in church music with an emphasis in organ from the University of Kansas.

Groenewold is an alternate winner of the 2011 American Round of the Tariverdiev Competition. She has performed throughout the Midwest, including performances at Goshen College and the Liszt Festival at the University of Kansas, and she was a featured organist in PipeDreams Live! Currently, Groenewold is the organist at First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence, Kansas.

Ringerwole is herself a distinguished organist. She holds a doctorate in organ performance and pedagogy from the University of Iowa, a master’s in music from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and a bachelor’s degree from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. During her teaching career at Dordt College, beginning in 1967, she built a strong organ program that she continues to support through this organ series.
