Dordt Opens Indoor Track And Field Season

The Meet… Dordt College Track and Field will host its annual Open Meet on Saturday, January 18 at the Dordt College Rec Center.

Last Time… The last action for many of these athletes came during the outdoor season at the GPAC Conference meet and the NAIA National Championship Meet in May.
Briana Vander Woude capped her collegiate track and field career with a fourth place in the high jump where she cleared 5-6 on the final day of the NAIA National Track and Field Championships at Indiana Wesleyan in Marion, Indiana. Vander Woude had to clear her first two heights on the last attempt at each height before missing at 5-8. Vander Woude actually tied for second in terms of height but fell to fourth by virtue of misses.
Katie Bonnema ran a :55.59 in the 400 meters to claim sixth place after entering the finals with the seventh fastest time of the prelims. Bonnema and Vander Woude earned NAIA All-American status with their finishes. Top-eight finishers at the National Championship meet are named All-Americans.
Bonnema joined with Jasmyn Schelhaas, Robyn Blount and Marisa Broersma to take fifth in the 4 x 400 to end the day and the meet for the Defenders. Bonnema took the baton in seventh place and was able to make up two spots in the final lap to finish a run of 3:49.37.
All of Dordt’s competitors earned All-American status in at least one event. Below are the finishes for Dordt’s athletes.

Last Year… Dordt College hosted its 2013 Indoor Track and Field Invite to open the season and Defender athletes met NAIA National Meet qualifying standards on Saturday, January 12 at the Dordt College meet held in the Dordt Recreation Center.
Briana Vander Woude met the automatic qualifying standard in two events, running the 55 meter hurdles in :08.63, tying a school record held by Linda Kroon in the process. Kroon’s record has stood since 1979. Vander Woude also cleared 5-4.5 in the high jump to meet the qualifying standard for the NAIA National Championship Meet to be held February 28-March 2.
Katie Bonnema ran the 400 meters in :58.53, meeting the standard of :59.10 in the event and Ryan Tholen just missed the qualifying standard in the mile run, timing out a 4:23.58. The standard in the mile is 4:23.20.
The next action for Dordt is Friday, January 18 at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invite in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Qualifying List…As athletes meet qualifying standards for the NAIA National Championship Meet to be held March 6-8 at Geneva, Ohio, we will note them in this space weekly.
The Schedule…The 2014 Indoor Track and Field season consists of five “regular” season meets, the GPAC Championships and the NAIA Championships. The Defenders will compete in meets on a weekly basis until the end of the season when there are ten days in between the GPAC and NAIA meets.
Next…The Defenders will go to the Nebraska Wesleyan Invite on Friday, January 24 in Lincoln, Nebraska.
