Lady Defender Softball Pair Named NAIA Scholar Athletes

Dawn Van Kley and Kandi Van Kooten, a pair of Dordt College softball regulars, have been named NAIA Scholar Athletes. Van Kley, a righthanded pitcher, recently graduated from Dordt College with a degree in elementary education. She leaves Dordt as the career leader in wins with 60 and strikeouts with 499. The Western Christian High School graduate was 11-9 this season with a 1.00 earned run average in 21 appearances and 133 and 2/3 innings pitched. Van Kley struck out 121 batters while walking just 27. Van Kooten played 34 games at third base for the Lady Defenders and batted .211 with eight runs batted in. Van Kooten is a junior elementary education major and is a 2000 graduate of Pella Christian High School. NAIA Scholar Athletes must be nominated by their coach, be a junior or senior, maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and make significant contributions to their team.
