Dordt Basketball At Morningside Wednesday

GAMETIME… Dordt will travel to Sioux City to face the Morningside Mustangs in GPAC basketball. The games at the Rosen Verdoorn Center will start at 6:00 with the women’s game and the men will start at 8:00. SCOUTING REPORT…The Morningside women are 13-4 overall and 4-3 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The Mustangs, under head coach Jamie Sale, have won two games in a row since a December 30 loss to Jamestown. Before that the Mustangs had strung together five wins in a row from December 7 to December 17. Morningside won five games in a row before dropping games to Concordia (90-82), Midland (68-64) and Northwestern (102-82). The three losses to conference foes dropped the Mustangs to 6-3 at the time. Morningside is 6-0 at home.
The Mustangs were no. 9 in the NAIA Division II women’s basketball poll released earlier this week. Morningside is just as potent as they’ve always been on offense where they are averaging 85.2 points per game and allow 64.3 points per contest. The Mustangs also hold a 46.-39.5 rebounding edge and have forced over 26 turnovers per game on average. The Mustangs are converting 42.5 percent of its shots but have not shot the three-point shot exceptionally well with a 26.7 percent success rate.
Ashlynn Muhl is scoring 12.1 points per game with an 8.6 rebounds per game average. Leann Osten is the only other player in double figures with a 10.6 average and she is tops on the team with 55 assists in 17 games played. Allison Bachman and Lexi Ackerman score 9.5 and 8.9 points per game respectively. Jessica Tietz is the only other player in averaging eight points or better with an 8.0 average and her rebounding average is 5.7. Twelve players have played in 14 or more games so far this season.
The Morningside men are 10-6 overall and 5-2 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with league losses to Midland and Hastings on back to back dates in late November. The other losses for Morningside are to Grand View, Ashford, Indiana Wesleyan and York. The Mustangs are 2-2 in games played at home and they are 7-2 since November 26. Morningside is receiving votes in the national coaches’ poll.
Jim Sykes’s team is averaging 82.9 points per game and the Mustangs are allowing 75.1 points per outing. The Mustangs are averaging 35.1 rebounds per game and give up 31.4 caroms per contest while converting 49.8 percent of the field goals they attempt and opponents make 45.0 percent of their shots. The Mustangs have made 40 percent of the field goals they attempt while going 135-339 from behind the arc.
Danny Rudeen tops the team with a 19.5 points per game average and he also takes down 5.4 rebounds and has handed out 3.5 assists per game. Rudeen is converting 45.5 percent of his three-point field goals and 45 percent of all his field goal attempts. Kyle Nikkel is scoring 14.1 points per game in a little over 20 minutes of action and his rebounding average is 6.4 which is tops on the team. Nikkel is converting nearly 70 percent of his field goals. Steve O’Neill adds 12.9 points per game and he is tops ont eh team with 4.5 assists per game.
DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 8-8 this season and 2-6 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Dordt started the season 6-2 and is 2-6 since then with wins over Martin Luther and San Diego Christian in that span. Dordt’s wins in conference play are over Doane and Mount Marty.
Dordt is averaging 70.4 points per game and allow 71.4 points per contest. Dordt has been outrebounded 38.1-39.8 through 16 games and has converted 40.9 percent of the field goals it has taken while opponents are making 38 percent.
Kara Van Dyke leads the active players with a 12.3 points per game average and she is also averaging 7.8 rebounds per game. Jaimie Kok is scoring 11.8 points per game and has a 6.2 rebounding average in 11 games played. Kayla Broekhuis is scoring 11.5 points per game since joining the team at the conclusion of the volleyball season. Broekhuis is converting 59.1 percent of her three-point tries and 60.5 percent of her total field goal attempts. Danelle Boone is scoring 7.4 points per game and has made 27 three-point shots. Dordt’s leading scorer, Elise Maresh, is currently out of action with an injury. Maresh was averaging 16.2 points and 4.2 rebounds through 13 games when she was sidelined.
The Defender men are 16-1 overall and 8-0 in the league. Dordt’s loss is to Davenport (Michigan) and that came on November 8 at Northwestern by a 91-65 score. Dordt has won 13 games in a row and is 6-0 at home.
The Defenders averaging 91.2 points per game and allow 75.8 points per outing. The Defenders also hold a 43.3-29.1 rebounding edge and make 50.3 percent of the field goals they attempt while opponents are making 44.1 percent. Dordt converts nearly 37 percent of its three-point attempts and is 366-510 from the free throw line while opponents are 262-366.
Kyle Lindbergh is averaging 17.2 points per game with a conference leading 10.7 rebounds per game. Lindbergh is converting 55.1 percent of his field goals and hands out 2.5 assists and blocks over one shot per game. Dalton Franken is scoring 15.9 points per game with a 51.3 field goal shooting percentage and he is taking down 4.5 rebounds per game. Austin Katje is converting 13.3 points per game and gets 4.0 rebounds and he is making 49.7 percent of his field goals and 45.6 percent of his three-point shots. Tyler Wolterstorff’s average is 11.2 points per game and Nathan Rindels is at 10.2 points per game with 4.9 rebounds and he hands out nearly four assists per game. David Den Herder is scoring 7.1 points per game and Alex Terpstra is at 6.5 points per game.
LAST TIME… The Morningside women were 92-81 winners over Briar Cliff on Saturday after playing to a 44-44 halftime deadlock. Morningside got 16 points from MaKayla Augustine as she appeared in a reserve role and hit 4-11 three-point attempts. Ashlynn Muhl scored 15 and had nine rebounds and Leann Osten scored 14 with five assists. Morningside had a 44-33 rebounding edge and converted 47.7 percent of the field goals it tried and forced 28 turnovers while committing 23.
The Dordt women lost to Concordia 81-63 on Saturday after trailing 44-29 at halftime. Dordt had a tough time holding its own on the boards with a 51-27 deficit and converted 21-55 field goals while Concordia was 30-64. Dordt was paced by Kayla Broekhuis with 21 points and four rebounds. Danelle Boone, Kara Van Dyke, Mycah Hulst and Jaimie Kok all had eight points in the loss.
The Morningside men beat Briar Cliff 79-73 after trailing 38-30 at halftime in a game played Saturday at the Newman Flanagan Center in Sioux City. Tanner Miller had 20 points and Kyle Nikkel scored 19 with seven rebounds. Danny Rudeen scored ten and had seven rebounds. Morningside was 26-56 from the field for 46 percent while limiting Briar Cliff to 19-51 shooting for 37 percent.
Dordt beat Concordia to run its record to 16-1 with a 69-61 win on Saturday in Sioux Center. Dordt was down 32-16 at one point in the first half but cut the gap to 34-26 before outscoring Concordia 43-27 in the second half. Dordt was led by Nathan Rindels with 19 points and five rebounds with two assists. Kyle Lindbergh grabbed a career high 19 rebounds and scored 17 with Dalton Franken scoring 15. The Defenders converted 25-59 shots from the field and had a 45-33 rebounding edge. Dordt limited Concordia to 5-25 shooting in the second half.
HISTORY… Morningside leads the women’s series 42-11. Morningside swept the two meetings last year with a 91-42 win on January 23. The Mustangs were led by Bobbi McManaman with 21 points and Jessica Tietz added 13. Dordt was led by Kara Van Dyke’s 14 and Kayla Broekhuis added seven. The teams met on December 12 and the Mustangs held on to win 64-62. Dordt’s Brianna Spronk scored 16 and Broekhuis had 13. Morningside got 18 out of Muhl and McManaman. Dordt’s last win in the series was a 77-72 win on December 5, 2009 as Amber Soodsma scored 23 and Kate Du Mez added 19 with six assists.
The Dordt men trail the series 16-14 and won the three meetings last season. The December 12 meeting in Sioux City went to Dordt by a 70-63 margin as Dordt held on after posting a 34-27 halftime lead. Dordt had a 53-30 rebounding edge and converted 20-26 free throws to 8-13 shooting for Morningside. Cliff Warner had 21 and Trevor Wolterstorff 12. Morningside got 11 from Tanner Ferguson and Tanner Miller added 10. The two teams met again on January 23 with Dordt prevailing 89-68 after leading 39-33 at halftime. Austin Katje had a team high 20 points and Warner added 14 with six assists. Morningside was paced by Rudeen with 19 and Nikkel with 16. The third meeting was played out on February 26 in the GPAC Finals and Dordt won 75-63 after racing to a 46-30 halftime lead. Trevor Wolterstorff and Jordan Vogel each had 16 points and eight rebounds. Rudeen led all players with 17 and Nikkel had 14 points and seven rebounds.
The last win for Morningside in the series came on December 4, 2010 when Garth Hamilton hit a three-point basket at the buzzer for an 82-79 win. Austin Katje led Dordt with 19 in that loss and Trevor Wolterstorff had 16.
MILESTONES… Kara Van Dyke went over 1,100 points on Saturday and is currently 8th all-time with 1,103 points. Carla Geylense is 7th with 1,173 points. Van Dyke also moved into 7th all-time in rebounding with 695 with Lisa Wubben in 6th with 708.
Austin Katje moved into 14th all-time in scoring with 1,213 points and Kyle Lindbergh is 22nd with 1,105 points. Lindbergh also moved into 2nd all-time in rebounding with 778, passing Terry Crull with 768 on Saturday. Lindbergh is also 14th in assists with 240 and trails Luke Ruter’s 245 in 13th. Lindbergh has also worked to 143 steals for 7th all-time and trails Evan Beimers with 148 and Ruter with 149.
NEXT… Dordt will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, January 11 and will be at home again on Wednesday, January 15 against Northwestern.
Morningside is scheduled to host Doane and Dakota State this upcoming Wednesday and Saturday respectively. The game with Dakota State is a men’s game only.
RANKINGS…. The Dordt College men are no. 5 in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll released on Tuesday, January 7. GPAC members Midland and Hastings are no. 8 and no. 17 respectively.
Six GPAC teams are ranked in the top-25 and another is receiving votes in the poll. Northwestern is no. 2; Concordia no. 7; Morningside no. 9; Hastings no.10; Briar Cliff no. 23 and Dakota Wesleyan is receiving votes.
