Dordt Basketball To Face Martin Luther Thursday

GAMETIME…The Dordt College Defender women’s and men’s basketball teams travel to New Ulm, Minnesota on Thursday, December 18 in non-conference basketball. The women’s game will start at 5:30 and the men at about 7:30. The games can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and live on the world wide web at www.dordt.edu/athletics. SCOUTING REPORT…The Martin Luther women are 3-6 this season and have not played a game in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) yet. The Knights have wins over Viterbo, Warburg and Central. They have played Northwestern out of the GPAC and lost 106-49 on November 19. They’ve lost two in a row since the win over Central, taking losses to Luther and Dakota State on December 10 and 14.
Martin Luther is getting outscored 77.3-61.7 on average and have a high point total of 82 and a have been limited to 52 points or less in four games—one of them was a 52-49 win over Central. Martin Luther has been outrebounded on average 51.1-38.8 and Martin Luther is making 33.2 percent of the shots taken from the field and opponents make 42.0 percent.
Alex Anthon is good for 11.3 points per game and she has handed out 23 assists in nine games. Hannah Hackbarth has a 9.0 points per game average and is tops on the team in three-point shots made and percentage with 17 and 30.4 respectively. Rebecca Englebrecht and Erin Schmeling score 9.2 and 8.3 points per game respectively and Engelbrecht is tops on the team in rebounding with a 7.8 average.
The Knight men have had a rocky start to the season with an 0-9 record so far and they are 0-3 in home games. They are getting outscored 87.1-62.7 on average and outrebounded 44.2-38.7. Martin Luther has committed 148 turnovers to 131 for opponents.
Galen Holzhueter is good for 18.6 points per game and 7.0 rebounds and he has converted 40 percent of his field goals. Luke Rothe is scoring 15.7 points per game and is taking down 5.9 rebounds per contest. Todd Brassow is scoring 9.3 points per game and Craig Wilke has a 4.6 points per game average.
DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 6-6 overall and 2-5 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Dordt has lost four games in a row since a 68-59 win on the road against Mount Marty on November 26. Dordt’s losses have come to Briar Cliff in overtime, Concordia, Dakota Wesleyan and Hastings.
The Defenders are scoring 72.1 points per game and allow 72.2 points per contest. Dordt is outrebounding teams 38.9-38.7 and have turned the ball over 219 times to 213 for opponents. Dordt’s shooting percentage is 40.4 and opponents are making 38.1 percent of the field goals they try.
Elise Maresh is scoring 16.0 points per game and takes down 4.0 rebounds per game. Kara Van Dyke’s scoring average is 12.8 points per game and her rebounding average is 8.2 and she is making 42.1 percent of her field goals while Maresh’s success rate is 51.2 percent. Danelle Boone’s scoring average is 8.0 and she is making 34.1 percent of her field goals and she has made 23-66 three-point tries. Kim Kroeze and Jasmin Schelhaas are averaging 5.0 and 4.6 points per game respectively.
The Defender men are 14-1 this season and 7-0 in GPAC play. Dordt has an 11 game winning streak intact, losing on November 8 to Davenport in Orange City. The Defenders have scored 100 or more points on five times and 85 or more 13 times.
Dordt’s scoring average is 93.5 and opponents are converting 78.1 points per game. Dordt’s rebounding average is 43.3 and opponents get to 29.2 caroms. The Defenders are making 50.5 percent of the field goals they have taken and opponents are at 45.0 percent. Ross Douma’s fifth edition at Dordt College has converted 340-469 free throws so far while opponents have converted 241-335.
Kyle Lindbergh’s scoring average is 17.9 and he has a team high 10.3 rebounding average and he has made 55.0 percent of his field goals. Dalton Franken’s scoring average is at 16.5 points per game and he is making 51.4 percent of his field goals and 53.1 percent of the three-point shots he has taken. Franken also has a 4.6 rebounding average. Austin Katje is good for 13.7 points per game and he is converting 47.8 percent of his three-pointers. Tyler Wolterstorff and Nathan Rindels average 11.5 and 10.1 points per game respectively and Rindels has a 5.1 rebounding average to go with nearly four assists per game. David Den Herder is coming off the bench for a 7.9 points per game average and he gets 4.5 rebounds per contest. Alex Terpstra’s scoring average is 6.2 and he has appeared in all 15 games for the Defenders as a reserve.
LAST TIME… Martin Luther lost to Dakota State in women’s basketball at Madison, South Dakota on Saturday, December 14, 74-62. The Knights were limited to 20-83 field goal shooting but took down 23 offensive rebounds to keep themselves in the game as they held a 54-49 rebounding edge. Erin Schmeling had 12 points and Leah Nass scored ten with 14 rebounds. Engelbrecht had seven points and nine rebounds and Alex Anthon had nine points.
The Defender women lost an 88-67 decision to Hastings as the Broncos pulled away from a 44-44 ties. Dordt was led by Maresh with 15 points and Van Dyke had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Kim Kroeze scored 13 and Jessica Jelsema had eight with six rebounds. Dordt had a 42-36 rebounding edge but had 25 turnovers to seven for the visitors.
Martin Luther’s men lost a 77-45 decision to Bethel on Saturday after trailing 40-29 at halftime. Martin Luther was held to 16-60 shooting and got outrebounded 44-33. Todd Brassow scored 17 and Craig Wilke had seven.
The Defender men beat Hastings 94-84 on Saturday after leading 36-35 at halftime. Dalton Franken led the Dordt attack with 24 points on 5-9 field goals and 13-17 free throws. Rindels had 21 points, four rebounds, five assists and one steal. Lindbergh had 19 points and nine rebounds and Katje had 13 points and Wolterstorff had nine points.
HISTORY… The Defender women lead the series 13-0 and won last year’s meeting 62-42. The two teams played every year from 1994-2006 before resuming the series last year. Maresh had 15 in the win and Schelhaas added 11 with Van Dyke taking down 11 rebounds. Alex Anthon scored 12 and Engelbrecht had 11 with nine rebounds.
The Defender men haven’t played Martin Luther since 2006 and lead the series 24-2. Dordt won the last meeting on December 6, 2005 by a 90-48 margin with Luke Ruter scoring 20 and grabbing 12 rebounds and Chad Huenink came off the bench to score 14 with Derek Keizer dumping in 12. Nathan Nass and Caleb Kurbis had 11 points each for the Knights.
MILESTONES…Dordt’s Kara Van Dyke continues to rise through the all-time scoring and rebounding ranks and is in the top-10 in both categories. Van Dyke has 1,060 points and is tenth all time and has 669 rebounds which is 9th.
Austin Katje has 1,192 points and ranks 16th. Kyle Lindbergh has 1,082 points which is 24th; 750 rebounds which ranks 4th; 233 assists which is 14th and 141 steals which ranks 7th.
NEXT… The Dordt women will face Westmont and San Diego Christian on December 30 and 31. Both Defender teams will host Concordia on January 4 in their first games of 2014.
RANKINGS…. Seven women’s teams are in the poll with Northwestern no. 2, Concordia no. 7; Midland no. 10; Morningside no.13; Hastings no. 16, Briar Cliff no. 19 and Dakota Wesleyan receiving votes.
The Defender men are ranked no. 11 while Hastings is no. 6 and Midland is no. 15.
The next polling will be released in 2014.
