Dordt Volleyball Advances To Elimination Match

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will play in the NAIA Volleyball National Championship single elimination bracket of the event at the final site at the Tyson Event Center in Sioux City, Iowa on Friday, December 6 against Wayland Baptist at 10:00 AM.   Quarterfinal action is Friday night with  the semifinal round of the event will be Saturday morning and the championship will be Saturday night.  The matches can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and live on the world wide web at  Results will be posted to and and also at https://www.ill total is a .

THE OPPONENT… The Pioneers from Wayland Baptist are 34-6 entering the bracketed portion of the NAIA Volleyball National Championship and have won five matches in a row since a Sooner Athletic Conference tournament loss to Oklahoma Baptist.  Jim Giacomazzi’s team went 3-0 in pool play, winning the Pool E title with wins over Vanguard, Northwestern and Spring Hill.  The only match of the three to be decided in more than three sets was the Spring Hill contest on Thursday night after Wayland Baptist had wrapped up the pool title. 

Wayland Baptist’s losses include three in league play or conference tournament play to National Qualifier Oklahoma Baptist with a non-conference losses to Vanguard,  The Master’s  and Texas Permian Basin.  The  Pioneers average 12.92 kills per set and get to 16.3 digs per outing.  Wayland scores 1.2 points per set on ace serves and 2.7 points per contest on blocks.

Shahala Hawkins is good for 3.0 kills per set with a .364 kill efficiency and Grecia Rivera’s kill average is a team high 3.33 and she gets to 3.6 digs per set and leads the team with 30 ace serves entering championship week.  Chelsea Driscoll and Claire Jacobsma average 2.1 and 2.0 kills respectively.  Ashlyn Westerman runs the setter position and puts up 9.8 assists per set and has 18 ace serves.  Mercades Torres is good for 3. 5 digs and Hawkins leads the team with 1.3 blocks.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt is 25-8 this season and 12-4 in the GPAC.  Dordt’s losses in the league were to Northwestern twice, Hastings and Nebraska Wesleyan.  Dordt’s other losses came to Viterbo, Tabor and Northwestern in the semifinal round of the GPAC Tournament and to Biola in pool play.

Dordt averages 13.45 kills per set with a .288 kill efficiency.  The Defenders get to 1.38 service aces and 15.7 digs with 2.1 blocks.  Opponents are hitting .183 against the Defenders and average 12.1 kills.

Brooke Wolterstorff averages 3.0 kills and 2.47 digs with 36 service aces.  Jenna Horstman’s average is 2.9 per set and Lindsey Floen has a 2.6 kills per set average and she is in on 1.0 blocks per set.  Meghan Krausman’s kill average is 1.9 and Elizabeth Kiel’s is 1.6.  Kayla Broekhuis is good for 5.0 digs and also has 27 service aces.  Celaine Haan has 33 service aces.  Kayla Gesink runs the setter spot for the Defenders and has a 10.4 assist average with 2.3 digs and 16 service aces and a 1.1 kills per set average. 

This is Dordt’s 10th berth in the national field and its first since 2010 and its first trip out of pool play since 2003.

LAST ACTION… Dordt won a tense battle with Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday night in a win or go home match in Pool C.  Dordt was led by Meghan Krausman, Brooke Wolterstorff and Jenna Horstman with 14, 13 and 12 kills each.  Kayla Gesink put up 51 assists and Kayla Broekhuis had 21 digs.  Dordt won the match 25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 28-26.

Wayland Baptist prevailed over Spring Hill on Thursday night by set scores of 25-20, 25-13, 23-25, 25-20.  The Pioneers had already secured the championship in the pool with their previous two wins.  Shahala Hawkins and Grecia Rivera had 25 and 20 kills each and Ashlyn Westerman had 52 assists.  Mercades Torres had 21 digs.

THE BRACKET…There will be four elimination matches on Friday morning/afternoon with Northwestern facing Midland; Grand View will face Georgetown; Columbia will battle Madonna and Dordt faces Wayland Baptist.  Texas at Brownsville, The Master’s, Biola and Concordia (California) all earned first round byes to the quarterfinal round this evening.

AFTER THIS… The winner will advance to face The Master’s Friday night at 5:45 pm.

HISTORY… This is the first meeting between these two teams.  Wayland Baptist is making its first appearance in the National Championship field.
