Prairie Grass Productions receives Gold MarCom Award

Dordt College’s Prairie Grass Production company received a Gold MarCom Award for the 12-minute documentary they created for Communities of Fusion, a group of organizations that provide opportunities for education and agriculture to people in Mozambique. This is the second award that the film has won to date.

Dordt College seniors Justin Gloudemans of Big Lake, Minnesota, and Jayson Korthuis of Lynden, Washington, spent four jam-packed days of filming in Mozambique, using only a GoPro camera, an iPhone, and one of Dordt’s professional HD Panasonic cameras. Korthuis called the experience a “whirlwind.”

“We had to be ready within about a week to go to Nampula, Mozambique. We scrambled to find airline tickets, and we were in a foreign country with limited Internet access.” Once they arrived in Mozambique, they went straight to work, shooting long hours for four days.

The students were spending a semester studying at Daystar University in Nairobi, Kenya, so when Dordt College Digital Media Production Professor Mark Volkers was asked to create a video, he knew they would be the perfect choice to travel to Mozambique to film.

“That was guerilla filmmaking at its best,” said Volkers. “They had little time to prepare, and they didn’t have an abundance of filming equipment available. They made the most with what little they had available to them.”

The film highlights the work of Communities of Fusion and explains the need for educating people in Mozambique about diet and nutrition, noting that many family diets consist largely of starches with little protein. “The average egg consumption is about eight eggs per person per year, compared to the United States where the average consumption is 250 eggs per person per year,” said Bruce Dooyema, an owner of Sioux Center’s Center Fresh Eggs, one of the organizations that participates in Communities of Fusion. The 2013 MarCom international awards competition recognizes outstanding creative achievement by marketing and communication professionals. There were more than 6,500 entries this year from throughout the United States, Canada, and other countries. Winning companies range in size from individuals and small production companies to media conglomerates and Fortune 500 companies.
