Dordt-Doane Football Saturday

THE FOE… Doane is 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the GPAC with conference losses to Nebraska Wesleyan and Dakota Wesleyan in successive games on October 5 and 12. 

Doane has run for 1,634 yards this season which works out to a 233 yards per game average while limiting teams to 105 yards per game on the ground.  The Tigers don’t pass as much as they have in seasons past as they get 125 yards per game in the air but opponents are throwing for 218 yards against them.

Kenneth Boggs leads the ground attack with 484 yards and two touchdowns and averages 5.1 yards per carry.  Clayton Moore has 345 yards and has three scores and a 6.3 yards per carry average.  Nate Meier is averaging 5.3 yards per carry and has a team high four rushing touchdowns with 313 yards on the ground.  Phil Hamburger is 48-94 in the air for 667 yards and six touchdown tosses.  Phil Thramer is 18-58 passing for 169 yards and three touchdown passes.  Nolan Kawata has 16 receptions to lead the Tigers and has a 12.7 yards per catch average while Mitch Marvin has eight catches for a 19.5 yards per catch average with three touchdowns.

Kam Lenhart has 31 solo and 27 assisted stops with two interceptions and two sacks.  Rob Keeney has 28 solo and 23 assisted stops with an interception and a fumble recovery.  Jeremy Wallace has 34 solo and 16 assisted stops and has eight sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss.

Josh Boggs has 21 punt returns for an 8.7 yards per return average and Kenneth Boggs has seven kick returns for a 17.4 per return average. Adonis Hulbert also has a 17.5 per return average on four kickoff returns.  Jordan Pedersen is 26-28 on point after tries and is 8-12 on field goals with a long of 48.  Brett Eyer handles the punting and has a 39.0 average on 41 punts.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt is 2-6 overall and 0-6 in the GPAC with three games remaining.  The Defenders average 195 yards per game on the ground and allow 190 rushing yards.  The Defenders surrender 231 yards in the air while gaining an average of 77 yards in air.

Dordt’s leading ground gainer is Lenard Manuel with 384 yards on 90 carries for a 4.3 yards per carry average.  Manuel has four rushing touchdowns.  Daniel Fennig has 314 yards on the ground and a 6.8 yards per carry average and has scored two touchdowns.  Erin Francis also has 262 yards on 48 carries and has a 5.5 yards per carry average. 

Zach Barker started the October 26 game with Northwestern at quarterback and is 14-27 through the air for 167 yards.  Sam Verhulst has 20 catches for 346 yards and three scores and Darryl Van Grouw has 13 catches for 188 yards and two scores.

Seth Vande Voort has made 45 solo and 37 assisted tackles at linebacker with seven tackles for loss.  Jake Atkinson has 44 solo stops with 22 assisted tackles while Cole McClain has 37 solo and 17 assisted stops.  Micah Applegate has a team high three sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss.  Cam Pitre and Atkinson each have two interceptions and four other players have one interception each. 

Daniel Fennig has five punt returns for a 12.0 yards per return average and he has 11 kick returns for 14 yards per return.  Trai Pickney has 13 kick returns and has a 15.7 yards per kick return average.  Heath Bonestroo handles the punting and has a 39.6 yards per punt average on 50 punts.  Barry Dykstra is 2-6 on field goal attempts with a long of 49 and is 16-17 on point after attempts.

PREVIOUSLY…Doane beat Concordia 28-7 and used a pair of second quarter touchdowns to take control of the game and led 21-7 at halftime.  Doane had 300 yards of offense to 234 for Concordia.  The Tigers ran for 259 yards and limited Concordia to 88 yards on the ground.  Phil Thramer ran for 80 yards and two touchdowns and completed 5-11 passes for 41 yards.  All five of Thramer’s passes were to different players with a long gain of 12 yards.

Dordt lost a 48-10 decision to Northwestern on Saturday after getting to within 14-10 early in the second quarter.  Northwestern scored a pair of touchdowns late in the first half to lead 28-10 and scored three more times in the second half.  Dordt ran for 125 yards and passed for 147.  Manuel ran for 37 yards on 12 carries and Pickney and Fennig each had 25  and 24.  Barker was 10-18 passing for 148 yards.  Van Grouw had five catches for 84 yards and Verhulst had four catches for 53 yards.  Vanoy Harris had five solo and five assisted stops and Vande Voort had five and three.  Atkinson and Jon Gardner each had seven tackles in the loss.

HISTORY… Doane leads the series 5-0 and won last year’s game 55-6.  Dordt was 6-3 after the first quarter with Trai Pickney scoring on a 14 yard run near the midpoint of the first quarter.  Pickney ended up running for 76 yards as Dordt gained 130 yards on the ground.  Doane threw for 309 yards and ran for 225 in the win and Kawata had four catches for 35 yards.

AROUND THE CORNER… Doane travels to face Briar Cliff in Vermillion, South Dakota on Saturday, November 9 while the Defenders will be on the road to Hastings that same day before concluding the season on November 16 at home against Dakota Wesleyan.

NATIONAL POLL…Morningside continues as the no. 1 team in the country while Northwestern and Concordia are no. 23 and no. 25.  Nebraska Wesleyan is receiving votes.  Six of the 11 teams in the GPAC have received votes in at least one poll this season.
