Dordt Volleyball Steps Outside Conference Thursday

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will travel to Buena Vista on Thursday, October 3 for a 5:00 varsity match.  The match can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM.   Results will be posted to www.dordt.edu/athletics and https://twitter.com/dcathletics and also at https://www.facebook.com/dordtdefenders .

THE OPPONENT… Buena Vista is 12-5 overall and 1-2 in Iowa Conference play.  The Beavers have also played GPAC member Northwestern this season  and have won seven of their last nine matches with the two losses coming to Concordia (Wisconsin) and Coe (Iowa).

Buena Vista is averaging 12.75 kills per set with a .219 kill efficiency.  The Beavers also average 1.62 service aces per set with 1.97 points per set off of blocks.  The Storm Lake, Iowa school’s volleyball team also averages 14.97 digs per outing.

Maddie Bardole is leading the team with 3.98 kills per set with 2.87 digs and she has a team high 22 service aces and a .254 kill efficiency.  Clayton Chelsea is good for 3.06 kills per set and Shelby Wiederhoeft is putting down 2.35 kills with a .286 kill efficiency and she averages nearly a block per set.  Sydnee Donnelli gets to 2.75 digs per set and Jordan Henningsen is good for 2.49 digs.  Taylor Salisbury tops the team with 3.51 digs per set and Jordan Leehy handles the setting  with a 9.68 assist average.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt College is 13-4 this season and 5-2 in the GPAC with losses in league play to Nebraska Wesleyan and Northwestern.  Three of Dordt’s four losses have come in five sets.  Dordt has an eight match winning streak already this season and they have now won two matches in a row after losing two last week.  The Defenders are no. 16 in the Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches’ Poll released late October 1.

Dordt is averaging 13.38 kills per set and are hovering around the .300 mark for kill efficiency with a .293.  The Defenders average 15.52 digs per outing and pick up 2.05 points per set on blocks and 1.48 on service aces.

Dordt features three hitters that are averaging better than 2.5 kills per set.  Brooke Wolterstorff is putting down 3.12 per outing and has a .279 kill efficiency with a 2.62 dig average.  Lindsey Floen puts down 2.95 kills per outing and has a .430 kill efficiency with 1.02 blocks per contest—tops on the team.  Jenna Horstman has a 2.66 kill average and has a .279 kill efficiency.  Meghan Krausman is good for 1.91 kills per outing and Elizabeth Kiel has a 1.44 average with a .267 kill efficiency.  Kayla Broekhuis gets to a team high 4.65 digs per set and has 17 ace serves. Kayla Gesink puts up 10.32 assists per set with an average of 2.42 digs per contest and she has ten ace serves.  Jocelyn Bousema averages 1.71 digs and has 18 ace serves and Celaine Haan leads the team with 19 service aces.

LAST ACTION… Coe beat Buena Vista on Tuesday night 25-12, 25-22, 21-25, 25-11.  Maddie Bardole had 17 kills in the loss and Chelsea Clayton added six.  Jordan Leehy put up 34 assists in the loss.  Coe took advantage of nine service aces and 26 Buena Vista attack errors.

Dordt pulled away from Mount Marty for a 25-20, 25-13, 25-11 win on Tuesday night.  The Defenders trailed 20-19 in set one before scoring the final six points and then rolled to the wins in sets two and three.  Horstman led a Dordt attack that featured a .343 kill efficiency as she put away nine kills.  Floen had six kills and just one error in 13 attacks.  Elizabeth Kiel added five kills.  Kayla Gesink put up 23 assists and had two service aces and Broekhuis had seven digs.

HISTORY… Dordt leads the series 3-0 after beating Buena Vista last season 25-23, 25-18, 25-18 in a match played at Sioux Center on October 19.  Danae Geels led Dordt with 13 kills and Krausman added eight kills.  Gesink lofted 31 assists and had eight digs along with Kayla Broekhuis.  Kirsten Van Zulden led the visitors with nine kills and Courtney Van Haaften put up 20 assists.

RANKINGS… Dordt is now no. 16 in the poll while three other GPAC members are in the poll that was released on Tuesday, October 1.  Northwestern is no. 6; Midland is no. 7 and Hastings is no. 24.

WHERE WE GO FROM HERE… Buena Vista will travel to Wartburg for Iowa Conference play on Wednesday, October 8 in their next action.

Dordt will host Doane on Saturday, October 5 with the match starting at 3:30 with the junior varsity and the varsity match will follow at about 5:00.  Dordt will also host Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, October 9 starting at 6:00 with a junior varsity match and the varsity match will follow.
