Dordt Volleyball Plays Pair In Nebraska

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska and Fremont, Nebraska for a pair of GPAC volleyball matches on Friday and Saturday, September 27 and 28.  The match with Nebraska Wesleyan will start with a junior varsity contest at 6:00 Friday night followed by the varsity game.  The Midland match is a 1:30 junior varsity start time on Saturday afternoon with the varsity to begin at about 3:00.  The Friday match at Nebraska Wesleyan can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and live on the world wide web at  Results will be posted to and and also at .

THE OPPONENTS… Nebraska Wesleyan is 10-2 overall and 2-2 in the league with wins over Morningside and Dakota Wesleyan and losses to Hastings and Midland in league play.  Wesleyan started the season with a nine match winning streak.

Wesleyan averages 13.93 kills per set with a .261 kill efficiency to go with 17.36 digs and 1.48 ace serves.  The Prairie Wolves also average 2.1 blocks per outing.  Katelyn Walsh is good for 3.38 kills and a .334 kill efficiency.  Mackenzie Ashton puts down 2.10 kills and averages 3.62 digs.  Malory Dahl and Alyssa Stanek are averaging 2.81 and 2.48 kills each.  Alexa Rosenau averages 6.31 assists and Alex Springman 4.83.  Mackenzie Hite has a team high 4.71 digs per set average.
Midland started the season with 21 straight wins before their contest with Dakota Wesleyan on September 27.  The Warriors have been pushed to five sets on four occasions and to four matches on three other dates.  The five set wins have come over Carroll (Montana), Grand View (Iowa) and Evangel (Missouri).

The Warriors are hitting .243 for the season and have a 13.90 kill average with 14.71 digs and 2.0 blocks per outing.  Midland also averages 1.63 service aces.  Mackenzie Scheef and Ashley Wheeler are averaging 3.06 and 3.04 kills per set and KC Heimann is knocking down 2.97 per match.  Megan Farley puts up 11.01 assists per set and averages 2.42 digs per outing.   Molly Pettit is getting to 3.68 digs and Mahala Egr gets to 2.69 digs per contest.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt College is 11-3 overall this season and 3-1 in the GPAC after a loss to Northwestern on Wednesday, September 24.  The loss to the league rival halted an eight match winning streak  and marked the third time this season that the Defenders have lost a five set match.  Dordt’s wins in conference play are over Briar Cliff, Morningside and Hastings.

Dordt College is hitting for a .295 kill efficiency with an average of 13.49 kills per outing to go with 16.02 digs, 2.13 blocks and 1.44 ace serves.  Opponents are averaging 11.84 kills and a .180 kill efficiency and teams are receiving 89.4 percent of Dordt’s serves successfully.

Brooke Wolterstorff is averaging  a team high 3.15 kills per set and has a .278 kill efficiency.  Wolterstorff is also averaging 2.73 digs per outing and has 14 service aces.  Lindsey Floen accounts for 3.04 kills per set with a .441 kill efficiency and she averages a team high 1.05 blocks per contest.  Jenna Horstman has lifted her season kill average to 2.62 while Meghan Krausman’s kill average is at 1.98 and she gets to 1.38 digs.  Elizabeth Kiel averages 1.39 kills.  Kayla Gesink puts up 10.45 assists per outing and has eight service aces with a 2.58 dig average.   Kayla Broekhuis is averaging 4.69 digs per contest to lead the Defenders.

LAST ACTION… Midland and Nebraska Wesleyan met on Tuesday with Midland winning 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22.  Scheef and Wheeler had 18 and 17 kills each for Midland and Farley put up 53 assists.  Pettit got to 16 digs in the win and Egr had 12.  Wesleyan was topped by Walsh with 13 kills while Springman and Rosenau put up 18 and 17 assists respectively.  Westphal had 13 digs and Ashton 11.

Dordt lost to Northwestern on Tuesday night by set scores of 25-23, 26-24, 20-25, 23-25, 15-10.  The Defenders got 20 kills each from Wolterstorff and Floen and 15 by Jenna Horstman.  Gesink lofted 60 assist s and Jocelyn Bousema and Celaine Haan both had three ace serves.  Broekhuis led the team with 11 digs.

HISTORY… Dordt has a 10-3 advantage in the series with Nebraska Wesleyan and the two teams split their play last season.  Dordt won 3-2 on September 22 in Sioux Center, prevailing 16-14 to win the match in set five.  Katelyn Schuller and Danae Geels had 18 and 15 kills each and Gesink 49 assists and Broekhuis 25 digs.  Wesleyan got 15 kills by Batie and Walsh had 12.  Springman put up 47 assists.

The two teams played again on November 3 and the Prairie Wolves prevailed 25-23, 14-25, 28-26, 25-21.  Floen had 13 kills in the loss and Schuller 14.  Gesink put up 34 assists and Bekah Posthuma 14.  Broekhuis got to 21 digs and Gesink 14.  Walsh had a match high 17 digs and Springman and Rosenau put up 22 assists each and Hite had 23 digs.

Dordt leads the series with Midland 18-2 with the Defenders winning last year’s meeting 25-20, 21-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-10.  Geels had 12 kills and Floen ten in the match played at Fremont, Nebraska on October 6.  Gesink lofted 40 assits and Broekhuis had 23 digs.  Scheef had 13 kills and Wheeler 10 while Farley put up 36 assists and Pettit had 16 digs.

RANKINGS… Dordt is no. 19 in the most recent NAIA poll with Midland no. 5, Northwestern no. 7 and Hastings no. 23 to complete the list of GPAC schools in the coaches’ voting.

WHERE WE GO FROM HERE… Nebraska Wesleyan is scheduled to host Briar Cliff on Saturday before going to Concordia on Tuesday, October 1.

Midland will face Doane on Wednesday, October 2 and will travel to face Northwestern on Saturday, October 5.
Dordt will host Mount Marty on October 1 and will travel to Buena Vista on Thursday, October 3.
