Nationally Ranked Volleyball Teams Clash Tuesday

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will host the third of three straight GPAC volleyball matches this Tuesday, September 23 against Northwestern.  The junior varsity match starts at 6:00 with the varsity contest beginning at about  7:30.The match can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and there will be live video available at   Results will be posted to and and also at .

BLACK OUT...Defender fans are encouraged to wear black for the match with the Red Raiders.

THE OPPONENT… Northwestern enters the contest with a 19-1 record and a 3-0 Great Plains Athletic Conference record.  The Raiders have won 18 matches in a row dating back to a 3-2 loss to Tabor on August 23.  Northwestern is 12-0 in three-set matches and they are 3-0 in matches that are finished in four sets.  In matches that have gone the limit Northwestern is 4-1.  Two of Northwestern’s last four matches have gone to five sets.

Northwestern is led by Kaitlin Floerchinger with a 3.95 kill average and a .268 kill efficiency.  She also has a team high 44 service aces and gets to 2.9 digs per outing.  Karlie Schut puts down 3.64 kills and has 28 service aces and gets 2.41 digs.  Kellie Goedken has a 2.04 kill average and Haley Chambers is at 1.81.  Brooke Fessler handles the setting with a 10.45 average and she is getting to 2.63 digs per set.  Alexis Bart leads the team with a 4.55 dig average and Goedken leads the team with 1.16 blocks per outing.

The Raiders average 13.2 kills with a .284 kill efficiency and they get to 15.78 digs per outing.  The Raiders average 1.84 ace serves and 2.32 blocks.  Northwestern is ranked no. 11 in the most recent Tachikara-NAIA Coaches’ Poll.

THE DEFENDERS… The Defenders are 11-2 overall and 3-0 in the GPAC with wins over Briar Cliff, Morningside and Hastings.  Dordt’s losses this season are to Tabor and Viterbo, both in five sets.  The Defenders have won eight matches in a row dating back to August 30.

Dordt College is led by Brooke Wolterstorff’s 3.06 kill average and gets to 2.90 digs and has 14 service aces.  Lindsey Floen has lifted her kill average to 2.94 and she has a .433 kill efficiency to go with 1.08 blocks per outing.  Jenna Horstman is putting down 2.58 kills per set and Meghan Krausman is at 2.04.  Elizabeth Kiel is good for 1.42 kills and is averaging just under a block per contest.  Kayla Gesink runs the setter position with a 10.3 assist average and she has a 1.22 kill average to go with 2.7 digs.  Gesink’s kill efficiency is .425.  Kayla Broekhuis leads the team with 4.94 digs per contest and she has a team high 15 ace serves this season.  Jocelyn Bousema is averaging 1.78 digs per outing.

The Defenders average 12.9 kills per contest with 1.4 service aces and 2.12 blocks.  The Defenders have a  .291 kill efficiency which ranks third in the country.  Dordt is averaging 16.04 digs per contest.

LAST ACTION… Northwestern hosted Doane on Saturday afternoon and won 3-2.  The Raiders got up 2-0 with wins in sets one and two 25-15, 25-12.  Sets three and four went to the visitors 25-22, 25-21.  Northwestern bounced back with a 15-6 win in set five. Floerchinger and Schut had 17 and 16 respectively and Goedken had nine.  Fessler put up 39 assit s and Bart had 13 digs and Fessler 10.

Dordt turned away Hastings 3-1 by scores of 25-19, 25-21, 31-33, 25-17.  Floen led Dordt with 14 kills and Wolterstorff had 12.  Gesink put up 41 assists and had 11 digs while Broekhuis had 11 digs.  Horstman, Kiel and Krausman had eight, seven and six kills respectively.

HISTORY… The Defenders lead the series 25-14 in matches played since 1998.  Last year’s meetings were split with each team winning at home in five sets.  Dordt won the September 26 meeting by scores of 25-19, 25-16, 18-25, 25-27, 15-9.  Katelyn Schuller had 14 kills and Danae Geels 13 while Krausman put down 10.  Gesink put up 37 assists and Broekhuis had 18 digs.  Floerchinger recorded 17 kills and Schut 11.  Floerchinger also had 13 assists and a service ace.

The match at Northwestern on November 1 went to the Raiders by scores of 27-29, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 15-7.  Schuller had 14 kill sand Floen 13 in the loss while Gesink put up 39 assists.  Broekhuis had a match high 31 digs.  Northwestern was topped by Floerchinger with 17 kills and she had 26 assists and 12 digs.  Schut was good for 12 kills and 12 digs and Bart had a team high 17 digs.

RANKINGS… Four conference teams are in the most recent national poll with Midland no. 5; Northwestern no. 11; Dordt no. 20 and Hastings no. 25.  Concordia (California), winners of 45 matches in a row, is no. 1 again this week.

WHERE WE GO FROM HERE… The Defenders will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to face Nebraska Wesleyan on Friday night and will go to Midland for a 1:30/3:00 junior varsity/varsity date with the Warriors on Saturday, September 28.
Northwestern is scheduled to face Concordia in Seward, Nebraska on Friday, September 27.
