Dordt Volleyball Hosts Morningside Wednesday

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will host the first of three straight GPAC volleyball matches this Wednesday, September 18 against Morningside. The junior varsity match starts at 6:00 with the varsity contest beginning at about 7:30.The match can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and there will be live video available at www.dordt.edu/athletics. THE OPPONENT… Morningside is 7-3 this season and stand 0-1 in the Great plains Athletic Conference after a loss to Nebraska Wesleyan last week. The Mustangs started the season with a 1-3 weekend at the Northwestern Classic and then found their stride with six straight wins before seeing that winning streak snapped against Nebraska Wesleyan. Not only did the Mustangs win six matches in a row they went undefeated in set play during that stretch, stringing together 18 set wins in a row.
Morningside averages 13.5 kills per set with a .240 kill efficiency. The Mustangs also get to 20.16 digs per set and average 1.8 points per set off of ace serves and 1.4 blocks per set off of blocks.
Maggie Vondrak is the Morningside leader with a 3.4 kill average and she also gets to 4.4 digs per outing. Gabi French and Kecia Verburg average 2.6 and 2.5 kills per set and Caitlyn Skorczewski is averaging 2.2 kills per set. The Mustangs employ a two setter offense with Hannah Roberg and TyAnn Buddenhagen averaging 5.7 and 4.4 assists respectively and Roberg tops the team with 11 ace serves and Buddenhagen has ten. Grace Chvatal is the leader in digs with 5.7 and has ten ace serves and Katie Kuck supplies 3.1 digs per outing.
THE DEFENDERS… Dordt College is 9-2 this season and has won six matches in a row since back to back losses to Viterbo and Tabor. Dordt has swept five matches, is 4-0 in matches that go five sets and they are 0-2 in matches that have gone the distance.
Dordt is averaging 13.6 kills per set with a .285 kill efficiency and they get to 17.7 digs per set. Dordt scores an average of 2.2 blocks per set and they get 1.5 service aces per set. Opponents are hitting .161 at the net and average 11.9 kills per outing.
Kayla Gesink is the setter for the Defenders and is averaging 10.3 assists per set with a 1.2 kills per set average with a .419 kill efficiency and she gets to 2.9 digs per outing. Brooke Wolterstorff puts down 3.1 kills per set with a .269 kill efficiency while Lindsey Floen adds 2.8 kills to go with a .407 kill efficiency and she is averaging a team high one block per set. Meghan Krausman and Elizabeth Kiel complete the five hitter rotation with 2.2 and 1.4 kills per set respectively. Kayla Broekhuis is good for 5.6 digs per outing and Wolterstorff is good for 3.1 digs.
LAST ACTION… Dordt played Briar Cliff on Saturday, September 16 by set scores of 25-15, 21-25, 25-21, 25-21. The Defenders hit for a .220 kill efficiency in the match and limited Briar Cliff to .137. Gesink had 44 assists, six kills and 12 digs. Wolterstorff had 15 kills and nine digs while Jenna Horstman and Meghan Krausman both put down 11 kills.
Krausman had eight digs while Floen had 10 kills and was in three block assists. Broekhuis led the team with 31 digs and Celaine Haan had two ace serves.
Morningside lost to Nebraska Wesleyan in Sioux City on Wednesday, September 11 by scores of 25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 30-28. The Mustangs were limited to a .149 kill efficiency while both teams had ten service errors. Wesleyan had eight blocks to Morningside’s five. French had a team high 17 kills and Vondrak had 14 kills with a team high 20 digs. Verburg added 11 kills with Roberg and Buddenhagen putting up 25 and 20 assists respectively.
HISTORY… Dordt holds a 13-6 series lead with most of the meetings taking place since Morningside entered the GPAC prior to the 2003-2004 school year. The two teams split their meetings last season with Dordt winning the October 3 meeting at the De Witt Gym 25-22, 22-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-7. Danae Geels had 14 kills and Gesink put up 53 assists. Loy Sahr and Krausman had 12 and 10 kills each for the Defenders and Broekhuis got to 13 digs. French put down 14 kills while Steffen and Vondrak had 13 and 12 kills respectively.
Morningside swept Dordt in the October 30 match up in Sioux City 25-17, 25-15, 25-21. Anastasia Ott and Vondrak put down 12 and 11 kills respectively while Megan Mounts put up 34 assists. Katelyn Schuller registered 10 kills in the loss and Gesink had 24 assists. Broekhuis got to 13 digs for the Defenders as Dordt struggled with their blocks, getting just four blocks while Morningside had nine and hit for a .324 kill efficiency.
RANKINGS… The Defenders moved to no. 21 in the first in-season poll conducted by the NAIA coaches. Dordt is one of four teams mentioned in the poll. Midland is no. 8; Northwestern is no. 12 and Hastings is receiving votes. Concordia (California) is the no.1 team in the country and has won 45 matches in a row.
WHERE WE GO FROM HERE…Dordt continues and early season conference homestand on Saturday when it hosts Hastings. The junior varsity gets underway at 3:30 and the varsity will start at 5:00.
Morningside will host Northwestern on Friday, September 21 in the next action for the Defenders.
