Volleyball Hosts Triangular

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will host a pair of matches on Saturday, September 7 at the De Witt Gym. The Defenders will face Grand View (Iowa) in the morning at 11:00 and York at 3:00. York and Grand View will square off at 1:00 as part of the tri-angular. The Dordt-Grand View match can be heard on KDCR. Both matches involving Dordt will be available via a video webcast at www.dordt.edu/athletics. THE RIVALS… Grand View enters play with a 3-5 record after snapping a five match losing skid with a win over Evangel on Saturday, August 31.
The Vikings hit for a .180 kill efficiency and average 12.55 kills per outing. Grand View is good for 15.8 digs per outing and they get one point per set on ace serves and 1.69 points on blocks.
Kadie Subbert averages 3.68 kills per set with a .260 kill efficiency. Erin Roggenburg is good for 2.77 kills per outing and she gets to 1.39 digs per set. Kelley Johnson is a strong third hitter with a 2.1 average and her dig average is 2.84.
Kelly Nakandakari leads the team with a 4.45 dig average and Chrissy Daggett tops the team with 7.06 assists per set.
York stood at 0-4 after its first weekend of play with losses to Dakota Wesleya, Dakota State, Valley City State and Clarke.
The Panthers are averaging 7.6 kills per set with a .022 kill efficiency and they get to 14.8 digs per set and they average one ace serve per outing.
Rileigh Lieneman is averaging 2.38 kills per set and Nicole Gates is putting down 1.85 per contest. Melanie Baxa is averaging 6.69 assists per set and she also averages 2.85 digs. Tatiana Arvie leads the team with a 3.54 digs per set average.
THE DEFENDERS… The Defenders are 6-2 this season after going 3-1 on consecutive weekends. Dordt’s losses have both come in five sets against Tabor (Kansas) and Viterbo (Wisconsin). The Defenders average 13.5 kills per set with a .272 kill efficiency and they get to 19.5 digs per set. Dordt gets 2.1 points per set on blocks and 1.5 points per set on ace serves.
Brooke Wolterstorff leads the Defenders with a 3.1 kill average and she has a .238 kill efficiency and gets to 3.5 digs per set. Lindsey Floen is averaging 2.9 kills per set with a .413 kill efficiency and she is averaging just under a block per set. Jenna Horstman and Meghan Krausman are at 2.8 and 2.1 kills per set respectively and Horstman is good for a .310 kill efficiency. Kayla Gesink runs the setting chores with a 10.2 average and Kayla Broekhuis leads the team with a 5.9 dig average. Gesink is getting to 3.3 digs and Jocelyn Bousema is good for 1.8 digs per outing.
LAST ACTION… Grand View had to go to five sets with Evangel before winning 25-18, 30-32, 21-25, 25-20, 15-12. Subbert went for 29 kills and Johnson put down 18 as both players hit better than .400. Daggett lofted 58 assists and Nakandakari had 22 digs and Roberts 14.
York lost a 25-14, 25-13, 25-6 match to Clarke on Saturday, August 31. Lieneman had six kills in the loss and Baxa put up 15 assists. Halie Ewing was the team leader in digs with nine.
Dordt beat Mayville State 25-15, 25-11, 25-23 on Saturday and won set three in dramatic fashion after getting behind 23-16 and scored the final nine points. Krausman was the top hitter for the Defenders with 11 and Wolterstorff had ten. Gesink lofted 34 assists and Broekhuis got to 33 digs.
HISTORY… Dordt and Grand View have played each other seven times and Dordt holds a 6-1 advantage in the series. The Vikings won the most recent outing, a September 7, 2012 meeting in Hastings. Grand View won the match 25-22, 25-19, 25-14 with Danae Geels putting down eight kills and Loy Sahr seven. Kayla Broekhuis had 14 digs and Kayla Gesink had 25 assists.
Dordt and York have never played each other in a volleyball match before this meeting.
RANKINGS…Dordt was receiving votes in the most recent Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll released on August 20. GPAC members Midland and Northwestern were no. 13 and no. 23 and Doane was also receiving votes. Concordia (California) was the preseason no. 1 after winning the 2012 national title to cap a perfect 38-0 record. In all, Dordt will play 10 matches this season against teams either in the top 25 or receiving votes.
WHERE WE GO FROM HERE…Grand View will face Texas Wesleyan, MidAmerica Nazarene and Baker next weekend.
York is scheduled to face the College of Saint Mary Flames on Tuesday, September 10 in a conference match.
Dordt will open the GPAC season on Saturday, September 14 when the Defenders travel to Sioux City to face the Briar Cliff Chargers.
