Volleyball Plays Four At Bellevue

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will travel to Bellevue, Nebraska to face four teams in the Bruin Labor Day Classic.  Dordt will face Viterbo (Wisconsin) and John Brown (Arkansas) on Friday at 10:00 AM and 3:00 pm.  Dordt follows with a pair of matches against the College of the Ozarks (Missouri) and Mayville State (North Dakota) Saturday afternoon, August 31 at 1:00 and 5:00.   Results will be posted to and and also at .

THE RIVALS… Viterbo is 4-0 after playing Waldorf, Mayville State, Valley City State and Jamestown on August 16 and 17.  The V-Hawks are led by Alicia Olson with a 4.42 kills per set average and she boasts a kill efficiency of .371 with a 1.42 block average.  Erica Willadsen and Sara Biermaier put down 2.83 and 2.75 kills per set respectively for a team that averages 13.0 per set and has a .283 kill efficiency.

Jerica Nelson puts up 8.8 assists per set and has a 2.2 dig average.  Brianna Brinkman averages 9.88 assists for a team that has split the setting duties.  Mandi Baumeister is leading the team in digs with a 3.92 average and Jennifer Krentz is good for 3.08 digs.

The Lacrosse, Wisconsin school averages 14.33 digs and 2.04 blocks per set.

John Brown is 2-1 this season with wins over Benedictine and Lyon and a loss in five sets to the College of the Ozarks.    The Golden Eagles average 11.09 kills per set and 2.27 service aces with 14.9 digs and 1.27 blocks.

Audrey Dearien is leading John Brown with a 3.33 average and has a .439 kill efficiency.  Erin McIlroy knocks down 2.33 kills per outing and Melissa Bakke 2.17.  Kailey Bain and Shayna Daniels each average 4.5 assists and Saci Williamson is getting to 3.0 digs.

The College of the Ozarks is 5-0 with wins over Texas Wesleyan, Texas College, St. Thomas-Houston, Wiley and John Brown.  The Bobcats average 11.58 kills per outing and 15.58 digs with 1.42 blocks and they get 1.68 points per set off of ace serves.

Hannah Meadows puts down 3.63 kills per set with a .322 kill efficiency.  Jenny Wuerfell is adding 2.44 kills per set and Jamie Reaves is putting away 2.19 kills.  Sarah Kreul is putting up 4.56 assists and Lindsay Boone is adding 3.63 assists.  Hayley Blair is getting to a team high 5.88 digs per outing and Reaves is averaging just under a block per set.

Mayville State has logged the most matches so far this season with a 3-4 record so far.  The wins for the Comets have come over Waldorf, Judson and AIB.

Mayville State’s team is averaging 10.46 kills per set with a .155 kill efficiency.  The Comets average 1.63 ace serves and 14.63 digs per outing with 2.29 blocks.

Josette Glatt leads the team with a 2.67 kill average and a .255 kill efficiency.  Betsy Smith leads the team in digs with a 3.38 average and Paige Connor is good for 2.42 digs per contest.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt College enters play with a 3-1 record after its play at the Red Raider Classic last weekend.  Dordt had sweep wins over Baker (Kansas) and Valley City State (North Dakota) and beat Jamestown (North Dakota) by a 3-1 count.  The lone loss of the weekend came to Tabor (Kansas) by a 3-2 count.

The Defenders average 12.7 kills per set and had a .301 kill efficiency after the first weekend of play.  Dordt got to 19.5 digs and averaged 2.27 blocks per outing and scored 1.7 points per set on service aces.

Brooke Wolterstorff leads the team with a 3.13 kills per set average and she has a kill efficiency of .382.  Lindsey Floen and Jenna Horstman average 2.87 and 2.47 kills per set.  Floen tops the team with 1.07 blocks per outing and she has a kill efficiency of .412.  Meghan Krausman and Elizabeth Kiel both knocked down 1.87 and 1.27 kills per set respectively.  Kayla Gesink lofts 9.53 assists per set and she averages one kill and 3.0 digs per contest.  Kayla Broekhuis ledas the team in digs with a 5.93 average while Wolterstorff got to 4.13 and Jocelyn Bousema 2.27.  Broekhuis is the team leader in ace serves with seven and Celaine Haan has five.  Three other players have four aces.

LAST ACTION… John Brown and the College of the Ozarks squared off on Monday, August 26 with Ozarks winning 3-2 behind 12 kills by Meadows.  John Brown was topped by Darien with 17 kills and Blair had 25 digs for the Bobcats.

Viterbo claimed a win over Jamestown on August 17 with a 3-0 win to cap their four match weekend two weeks ago.
Mayville State lost to William Penn last weekend by a 3-1 margin.

Dordt capped their weekend in Orange City with a 3-2 loss to Tabor.  Dordt won sets one and two 25-15 and 25-15 but the Defenders lost sets three and four 25-22, 25-22.  Dordt lost set five 15-12 after Tabor pulled away from a 12-12 tie. 

Dordt was led by Brooke Wolterstorff and Lindsey Floen with 15 and 14 kills respectively.  Kayla Broekhuis had 30 digs and Wolterstorff 25.  Kayla Gesink put up 51 assists.

HISTORY… The Defenders are a combined 10-1 all-time against their four opponents.  Dordt is 5-0 against Mayville State; 3-0 against Ozarks; 2-0 against John Brown and 0-1 against Viterbo.

RANKINGS…Dordt was receiving votes in the most recent Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll released on August 20.  GPAC members Midland and Northwestern were no. 13 and no. 23 and Doane was also receiving votes.

Concordia (California) was the preseason no. 1 after winning the 2012 national title to cap a perfect 38-0 record.  In all, Dordt will play 10 matches this season against teams either in the top 25 or receiving votes.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE…Dordt will host a triangular with Grand View and York next Saturday, September 7.

Mayville State’s next match is at Concordia (Minnesota).

Viterbo will play Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Ozarks will host Central Baptist and John Brown will travel to a classic hosted by Baker next weekend.
