Volleyball Opens Season With Four Matches

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will travel to Orange City to face four teams in the Northwestern Red Raider Classic. Dordt will play Baker (Kansas) and Valley City State (North Dakota) on Friday at 2:30 pm and 8:30 pm respectively.   Saturday the Defenders will play Jamestown (North Dakota) and Tabor (Kansas) at 1:00 and 5:00.  Results will be posted to www.dordt.edu/athletics and https://twitter.com/dcathletics and also at https://www.facebook.com/dordtdefenders .

THE RIVALS… Baker is opening the 2013 season as well after posting a 19-14 record in 2012.  Baker was a balanced team in 2012 with three players posting averages of over two kills per outing led by Savannah Smith with a 2.98 kill average and she had a kill efficiency of .229.  Jana Boss set for the Wildcats and averaged 8.24 assists per contest while Renata Dill was good for a team high 4.83 digs per outing.  Dill returns for her senior season while both Smith and Boss are not on the 2013 roster.  Crystal Simon and Danielle French are the top returning hitters as they put down 2.31 and 2.1 kills per set respectively in 2012 for a team that had a .206 team kill efficiency.  Baker averaged 11.61 kills and 16.29 digs and 2.63 blocks as a team.  Baker is receiving votes in the NAIA national poll.

Valley City State was 15-22 last season and stand 1-1 this season after losing to Viterbo and beating Waldorf last weekend.  The Vikings return four mainstays from last year’s team with Aurissa Martens leading the way with a 3.25 kill average this season after putting down 2.94 per set last season.  Alley Theroux is averaging 2.0 kills through two matches and Anna Neufeld is setting for a 4.25 assist average one year after averaging 4.53 assists per set in a 6-2 system.  Valley City State averaged 10.7 kills with 11.7 digs and 1.7 blocks per outing last season.

Jamestown put together a 27-9 record last season and are 1-1 this season with a loss to Viterbo  and a win over Waldorf in pair of matches on August 17.  There are four players for the Jimmies to build around for this season as Kaia Buck, Amanda Kramer, Sarah Becker and Janna Johnson all return after strong seasons in 2012.  Buck put up 9.67 assists per set with 1.95 digs per outing last season.  Amanda Kramer averaged 1.2 digs per season last year and has upped that average to 6.0 per outing in two matches this season.  Sarah Becker and Janna Johnson both had strong seasons at the net last year as Becker put down 3.5 kills and Johnson 1.55.  Becker has a 3.5 kills per set average this season to go with a .519 kill efficiency.  Jamestown is receiving votes in the NAIA national poll.

Tabor was 18-10 last season and won eight matches in a row from October 15 to November 6.  Holister Wolf, Jessie Vogts, Katie Kaufman and Courtney Erwin all return for the 2013 season.  Hollister was the setter for the Blue Jays last season and averaged 10.6 assists.  Vogts put down 2.89 kills and Kaufman 1.5.  Amy Jo Maphet was the top digger with an average of 4.1 per outing last season.  Tabor averaged 12.4 kills per set with a .222 kill efficiency and got to 14.3 digs per outing.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt was 22-12 last season and fought its way to an 11-5 league record.  Untimely injuries made life difficult at the end of the season as the Defenders dropped three regular season matches in a row to close the year and then stumbled against Briar Cliff in the GPAC tournament.

The Defenders return several players who have played in the rotation for two and three seasons.  Kayla Gesink returns to set for the Defenders and averaged 9.3 assists per outing and had a 2.5 digs per outing average.  Lindsey Floen averaged 2.4 kills per set and had a kill efficiency of .287 and 1.2 blocks per contest.  Jenna Horstman averaged 1.6 kills per set and Meghan Krausman had a 1.7 average last season.  Kayla Broekhuis led the defensive efforts in the back row with a 4.3 digs per set average and Jocelyn Bousema and Celaine Haan both dig averages of 1.7.

Dordt averaged 12.2 kills per set last season with a .209 kill efficiency and averaged just over 1.3 ace serves per contest.  Dordt also had a 14.1 dig average and put up 2.6 blocks per set.

HISTORY… The Defenders have a combined 13-2 record against the four opponents.  Dordt stands 4-1 against Baker after beating them 20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-21 on September 1, 2012 at the Bellevue Classic.  Horstman put down 14 kills and Floen 13 while Gesink lofted 42 assists and Broekhuis had a team high 23 digs and Haan got to 14.  Crystal Simon posted 13 kills in the loss for Baker.

Dordt is 5-0 against Valley City State and beat the Vikings 25-14, 25-17, 25-22 on August 24, 2012 at the Northwestern Classic.  Katelyn Schuller had 10 kills and Gesink 21 assists.  Gesink also had a team high six digs and Floen was in on four blocks.

Dordt has beaten Jamestown in three of the four meetings with Dordt prevailing on August 25, 2012 at the Red Raider Classic by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 25-27, 22-25, 15-11.  Dordt totaled 61 kills in the match and was led by Danae Geels with 19 kills and Floen had 13.  Gesink put up 44 assists and had a team high 23 digs.  Jana Van Zanten and Broekhuis also accounted for 15 digs and Floen registered 10 blocks.

Dordt and Tabor have only played once with Dordt beating the Blue Jays 25-13, 25-17, 25-13 on September 5, 2009.  Kendra Potgeter put away 12 kills while Cassie Huizenga and Jessica De Stigter split the setting chores with 16 and 13 respectively.  Dorinda Hibma got to a team high 10 digs.

RANKINGS…Dordt was receiving votes in the most recent Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll released on August 20.  GPAC members Midland and Northwestern were no. 13 and no. 23 and Doane was also receiving votes.  Concordia (California) was the preseason no. 1 after winning the 2012 national title to cap a perfect 38-0 record.  In all, Dordt will play 10 matches this season against teams either in the top 25 or receiving votes.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE…The Defenders will be back in action with four matches next weekend at an event hosted by Bellevue (Nebraska)  After that the Defenders open the home portion of their schedule with a triangular involving Grand View and York.

Baker will play three other GPAC teams over the course of the weekend as they play Doane, Hastings and Northwestern. 
Valley City State has Morningside, Northwestern and Doane on the schedule for this weekend.

Jamestown is slated to face Doane, Morningside and Hastings at the Red Raider Classic.

Tabor will also play Northwestern, Morningside and Hastings this weekend.
