Dordt Baseball Hosts GPAC Doubleheaders

GAMETIME… The Dordt baseball team will host a pair of GPAC doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6 at Open Space Park in Sioux Center.  The games on Friday start at 4:30 and can be heard via a webcast at Keep up to date on the Saturday games via  on Saturday.

SCOUTING REPORT… Hastings is 1-3 in the GPAC and 5-17 overall.  The Broncos split conference action with Concordia and was swept by Doane on March 30. 

The Broncos are batting .235 this season and have been outscored 154-94 while opponents are batting .322 against them.

Brent Hermanussen has 15 hits--six of them doubles and has knocked in seven runs while scoring six.  Trenton Neill is batting .250 and has 16 hits with eight runs batted in.  John Lamaster has a team high 13 runs batted in and Ryan Anderson has Hastings lone homerun of the season.

John Lamaster is 3-2 on the mound in 22 2/3 innings and has a 6.75 earned run average.  AJ Fruchtlhas a team high 27 strikeouts in 27 innings and Jeremy Williams is 1-3 after pitching 29 2/3 innings.

Doane is 18-11 this season and stand 3-1 in GPAC play.  The Tigers split with Midland on March 28 before sweeping Hastings on March 29.  The Tigers have outscored foes 148-118 this season and have a .261 batting average and a team earned run average of 3.60.

Chris Manning has a team high 27 hits with six doubles and has knocked in 12 runs to go with a .351 batting average.  AJ Spanel is batting .313 with 26 hits and has 13 runs batted in and Andres Rivera is batting .307 with 23 hits and 12 runs batted in.  Ethan Schroeder is the team leader in doubles with seven and runs batted in with 17.

Josh Hayden is 3-0 in 11 appearances with 16 innings pitched and 17 strikeouts in 16 innings of work.  Elliott Engle  is 3-3 this season with a team high 45 2/3 innings of work and has a 2.17 earned run average and a team high 38 strikeouts.

DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt College is 3-10 this season and 1-3 in GPAC play after losing a pair of one run games to Mount Marty on Saturday.  The Defenders have been outscored 19-14 in their four GPAC games. 

Dordt is batting .232 this season and have a team earned run average of 6.07 this season.  Nick Serrato has a team high 13 hits and is batting .302 this season.  Nathan Fraley bats .279 and has 12 hits and ten runs scored and has knocked in four runs.  Aaron Parks has ten hits and a team high six runs batted in.  Fraley tops the team with six stolen bases.

Ben Van Kekerix is 2-1 this season with a 3.71 earned run average and has 15 strikeouts in 17 innings.  Lucas Carls has pitched 16 innings in three starts but doesn’t have a decision yet.  He has a 3.38 earned run average and has 12 strikeouts.  Mark Nyhoff and Jake Slings each have multiple starts to their credit and have earned run averages of 7.98 and 7.50 respectively.

THE SERIES… The Broncos lead the series 17-5 and won last year’s doubleheader in Hastings on March 30 by scores of 4-0 and 4-3.  Doane leads the series 14-6 and won last year’s games in Crete by scores of 6-4 and 23-6.

NEXT UP… Dordt will face Manhattan Christian and Central Christian in Kansas no April 9 and 10.  Hastings is scheduled to face Northwestern on Saturday, April 6 in Orange City while Doane will host Bellevue on April 9.
