Dordt Baseball Opens GPAC Season

GAMETIME… Dordt College will face Morningside on Friday, March 29 and Mount Marty on Saturday, March 30 in GPAC baseball action.  The games on Friday will be at Lewis and Clark Park starting at 3:00      while the March 30 games are scheduled for a 1:00 start in Yankton, South Dakota.

SCOUTING REPORT… Morningside is 9-13 this season and will be playing in its GPAC opener.  The Mustangs split with Graceland in its most recent action and also split with Wayne State on March 17. 

Morningside has a .274 team batting average with 116 runs scored and has allowed 127 runs.  Teams are batting .289 against Morningside pitching and the Mustangs have a team earned run average of 5.54. 

Keaton Rowe is batting .391 in 18 games played with 18 hits and a team high 15 runs batted in.  Tanner O’Neill is batting .322 with 14 runs batted in and Travis Hanson has a team high 11 stolen bases while boasting a .321 batting average.  Britton Adams is the only pitcher with multiple wins and is 2-2 in five appearances.  All of Adams pitching has been done in relief and he has worked 9 2/3 innings.  Jeff Gacke leads the team in innings pitched with 22 2/3 innings thrown and has started five games and has struck out 17 batters.  Lance Spongberg tops the team in strikeouts with 18 in 13 2/3 innings.

Mount Marty is 6-12 this season and is playing in their GPAC opener on Thursday against Northwestern.  The Lancers have won two of their last three with wins over Valley City State and Minot State and a loss to Wayland Baptist. 

The Lancers are batting .304 this season led by Jared Miller’s .388 average to go with two homeruns and 18 runs batted in and he has ten runs scored.  Mathias Godsil is batting .348 and Zac Hollenback is at .343.  Tyler Edler is good for a team high 19 runs batted in this season while Hollenback tops the team with 20 runs scored. 

Taylor Klapperich and Cass Key-Darlington each have two pitching wins.  Key-Darlington leads the team with 27 innings pitched and he has a 4.67 earned run average.  Dominic Wieseler is the leader in strikeouts with 27 in 20 innings of work.

DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt is 2-7 this season and have a team batting average of .235 up to this point.  The Defenders have been outhit 81-59 so far.  Dordt has not played since a non-conference doubleheader with Midland on March 19. 

Jason Wapnick is batting .375 with three doubles and three runs batted in.  Nick Serrato bats .333 with ten hits and Bryan Wallman has three runs batted in and is batting .308 in five games played.  Andy Kollbaum leads the team with four runs batted in.

Ben Van Kekerix is 1-1 with a 5.40 earned run average in ten innings of work and Josh Van Kekerix is 1-1 in four appearances and eight innings of work.  Jake Slings tops the team with nine strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings and two appearances.

THE SERIES… Morningside leads the series 26-3 and swept the games on April 5 in Sioux City, Iowa.

Mount Marty tops the series with Dordt 61-23 with the two teams splitting their games on April 7.  Dordt won the opener 7-2 with Lucas Carls getting the win while allowing three hits and striking out five.  Eric Anderson had a pair of hits in the win.  The Lancers won game two 10-0 to take the split.

NEXT UP… Morningside will host Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday while Mount Marty will host Dakota State on Monday, April 1.  Dordt is scheduled to host Hastings on April 5 and will host Doane on Saturday, April 6.
