Dordt Trio Named Scholar-Athletes

(Tuesday, March 12; Sioux Center, Iowa) Kayla Broekhuis (Junior; Edgerton, Minnesota), Elise Maresh (Junior; Beresford, South Dakota) and Brianna Spronk (Senior; Edgerton, Minnesota) have earned NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete honors for the recently completed 2012-13 season.
Spronk claims the honor for the second straight season and is a Health Human Performance: Exercise Science/Psychology major. Spronk leaves the Dordt womens’ basketball program as the career leader in games played with 121 and she scored 1,029 points during her career with 624 rebounds. She ranks 12th and 11th in those two categories respectively. Spronk averaged 11.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game this season. Spronk plans to attend graduate school this fall.
Broekhuis is a Health Human Performance:Exercise Science major and averaged a team high 12.0 points per game this season for the Defenders and took down 4.6 rebounds per contest and had a team high 63 three-point baskets made.
Maresh majors in Agriculture: Animal Science and averaged 9.7 points per game for the Defenders and had 4.9 rebounds per game.
178 Division II Women's Basketball student-athletes were named 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.
