Mia Kornelis will present vocal recital at Dordt College

March 11, 2013

Dordt College senior Mia Kornelis will present a soprano vocal recital Saturday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. A reception will follow.

Kornelis, of Sioux Center, Iowa, will perform a set of three arias, one from each act of the French opera Contes d'Hoffman (Tales of Hoffman) by Offenbach. On the final piece of that set, she will perform with her roommate Maria Bouwkamp, a mezzo-soprano from Pella, Iowa. The final piece of the recital is the premiere performance of a commissioned piece, love is a place – based on poem by e.e. cummings, by Dordt College senior Peter Kuipers (Platte, South Dakota), who will also accompany her on flugelhorn.

Majoring in music management, Kornelis has been a chapter finalist and regional semifinalist in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition and has been the recipient of the Jack Groetenhuis Memorial Scholarship and Steensma Music Scholarship at Dordt College. Her vocal instructor is Pam De Haan.

Additional participants in the recital include seniors Nathan Friend on cello (Sioux Center, Iowa) and Janelle Bolkema on violin (Sioux Center, Iowa). To learn more about Dordt College’s music program, visit www.dordt.edu/music.
