Sumner Picks Dordt College

March 5, 2013

(Tuesday, March 5; Sioux Center, Iowa)  Bryan Sumner, a senior at Ankeny High School (Iowa), has announced his intention to attend Dordt College and join the Defender basketball program.

Sumner is a 6-2 guard and is averaged 12 points and three rebounds along with a steal per game in his senior campaign.  He averaged nine points and three rebounds last season in helping the Hawks to a third place finish at the Class 4A State Tournament and a Central Iowa Metro League championship.  Sumner also averaged eight points as a sophomore when Ankeny placed third in the 2011 state tournament.  Ankeny has won over 60 games with Sumner in the lineup.

“We are definitely excited to have Bryan join our basketball program.  He has experienced a great deal of success in high school under head coach John Petersen at tradition-rich Ankeny high school and also on the AAU circuit as part of the Kingdom Hoops program under the direction of Jake Sullivan,” said Dordt College coach Ross Douma.  “Bryan’s competitive toughness and gym-rat mentality will only serve to upgrade our program.  In addition, Bryan is a high character young man who is an exceptional student in the classroom.  We are looking forward to seeing Bryan develop in many capacities during his time at Dordt College.”

Sumner is a 2013 Iowa Basketball Coaches’ Association Academic All-State pick and earned first-team all-conference honors from the CIML coaches and honorable mention honors from the CIML earlier in  his career.

Bryan is the son of Jenny and Scott Sumner of Ankeny, Iowa.  He plans to study pre-phsyical therapy at Dordt College.
