Dordt-Concordia Basketball Saturday

GAMETIME… Dordt College will travel to Seward, Nebraska on Saturday, February 9 in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball to face Concordia.  The women’s contest starts at 2:00 and the men will get underway at 4:00.   The games will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and at kdcr.dordt.edu.  Results will be available at https://twitter.com/dcathletics  and at www.dordt.edu/athletics when complete

SCOUTING REPORT… The Concordia women are 21-5 this season and hold a 13-4 record in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  The Bulldog women won their first 15 games and were the pre-season no. 1 team in the NAIA Division II basketball poll.  Since January 5 the Bulldogs are 6-5 and have lost three of their last four games against Briar Cliff, Northwestern and Concordia (Michigan).  The other losses in the league are to Dakota Wesleyan and a double overtime setback in Sioux Center against Dordt College.

Concordia has outscored teams by an 81.2-62.3 margin this season and Drew Olson’s team is outrebounding teams 42.2-40.8.  The Bulldogs have forced 707 turnovers through 26 games, a 27 turnovers per game average.  The Seward, Nebraska based team has committed 404 turnovers and makes 41.1 percent of the shots it takes from the floor while holding teams to 37.7 percent and they have 440 steals as a team.

Concordia is topped by Kristen Conahan’s 15.8 points per game and her 79 assists and 87 steals.  Bailey Morris knocks down 14.3 points per game and has converted a team high 44 three-point shots and has handed out 72 assists with 80 steals.  Katie Rich completes the double digit scoring with a 10.8 points per game average with 5.0 rebounds.  Jericca Pearson adds 7.4 points and has appeared mostly in a reserve role while Tracy Peitz is good for 7.1 points per game.  Lori Loboda is the top rebounder with a 6.6 average and she scores 6.9 points per game.

The Concordia men are 6-19 this season and stand 2-15 in the GPAC with wins over Mount Marty and Nebraska Wesleyan in November.  The Bulldogs started the season with five wins in six games.  The lost an overtime game at home to Midland on November 28 and that started a 14 game losing skid that they ended on January 25 with a win over Concordia-Chicago.  Since that win the Bulldogs have lost four games in a row.  Concordia has lost six games by single digits.  The Bulldogs faced a trying season with former head coach Grant Schmidt resigning shortly before the season began and they announced last week that their leading scorer Porter Birtell would not return this season after sustaining a concussion.

The Bulldogs average 70.7 points per game and allow 78.6 points per contest.  The Bulldogs are making 44.6 percent of their shots and allow opponents to make 47.5 percent of their field goal attempts.  Concordia is getting outrebounded by a 34.4-32.7 margin and have turned the ball over 360 times in 25 games to 328 times for opponents.

Birtell was averaging 13.6 points per game when his season ended and he was making 65.5 percent of his field goals with 5.2 rebounds. Beau Smith scores 13.0 points per game with 5.8 rebounds and he is making 46.6 percent of his field goals.  Joel Haywood adds 10.4 points per game and grabs 3.5 rebounds and has 62 assists.  Charles Dunbar has a 7.6 points per game average to go with 92 assists and 38 steals.  Brent Houchin has lifted his average to 9.1 points per game and is making 50.9 percent of his field goals.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 15-13 overall and 9-9 in the GPAC.  Dordt halted a three game losing skid with two wins in a row in their last two games and are 7-5 since Christmas

Dordt is averaging 69.0 points per game while allowing 64.0 points per game.  Craig Stiemsma’s squad is making 41.3 percent its field goal attempts and opponents are making 39.6 percent of its attempts.  Dordt holds a slight 36.8-36.0 rebounding average and have committed 538 turnovers to 566 turnovers through 28 games for opponents. 

Kara Van Dyke scores 13.5 points per game grabs 7.4 rebounds per game and she is making 48.8 percent of her field goals.  Kayla Broekhuis converts 13.0 points per game with a team high 62 three-point baskets made.  Brianna Spronk is scoring 10.9 points per game and she is grabbing 5.1 rebounds per game  with a team high 69 assists and 56 steals.  Jasmin Schelhaas is scoring 7.0 points per game and Elise Maresh is at 9.6 points per game with Jaimie Kok knocking down 5.1 points per game.

The Defender men are 21-6 this season and 13-5 in the conference with two games to go.  The Defenders are 10-3 since Christmas and have played in two overtime games this season, a pair of losses by two points on the road against Northwestern and Nebraska Wesleyan.  Dordt’s other losses in the league have come to Midland, Doane and Mount Marty.

Dordt scores 80.0 points per game and allow 68.8 points per outing while converting 49.8 percent of its shots and limiting opponents to 42.9 percent shooting.  Dordt’s rebounding difference is 39.3-30.6 and they’ve committed 375 turnovers through 27 games while forcing 326 turnovers. 

Cliff Warner’s scoring average is 14.9 points per game with 103 assists and he has a 2.9 rebounding average and 31 steals.  Warner is 98-218 on three-pointers this season for 45.0 percent success.  Trevor Wolterstorff is at 13.9 points per game and he has a team high 6.7 rebounds per contest.  Jordan Vogel is good for 13.0 points per game with 64.7 percent field goal shooting and he grabs 5.1 rebounds per outing.  Austin Katje is the fourth double digit scorer with a 10.3 average and he is 42-116 this season on three-pointers.  Chris Sievers scores 9.5 points per game and has lifted his scoring average to 52.9 percent.  Shawn Keizer’s average is 4.8 points per game while Kyle Lindbergh is at 7.0 points per game with 5.8 rebounds. 

NEXT… Dordt wil have a week off before concluding the regular season against Doane on Saturday, February 16.  Concordia is scheduled to travel to Hastings on Wednesday, February 13.

LAST TIME… The Concordia women lost to Briar Cliff in Seward on Wednesday night by an 89-80 margin after trailing 48-36 at halftime.  Concordia converted 28-82 shots and made 7-32 three-point attempts while getting outrebounded 46-40.  Briar Cliff had 27-54 shooting success  and turned it over 31 times to 22 times for the Bulldogs.  Bailey Morris scored 20 points and Kristen Conahan had 17 points on 7-24 shooting.  Lori Loboda scored 15 and had ten rebounds.

The Defender women beat Dakota Wesleyan 60-59 Wednesday night with Jasmin Schelhaas hitting the game winner with twelve seconds left.  Kayla Broekhuis scored 17 and had five rebounds with four assists.   Elise Maresh scored 14 and Kara Van Dyke knocked down 13 with five rebounds.

The Briar Cliff men beat Concordia 72-68 after leading 28-27 at halftime.  Brent Houchin led Concordia with 26 points on 9-13 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds.  Joel Haywood converted 14 points and Beau Smith had 12 points with five rebounds and two assists.

Dordt dropped Dakota Wesleyan 79-69 after leading 36-33 at halftime.  Dordt’s Cliff Warner and Jordan Vogel had 17 points each and Trevor Wolterstorff scored 14.  Vogel had 13 rebounds and Wolterstorff had eight rebounds.  Dordt made 28-60 field goal attempts and they were 16-23 from the free throw line.

SERIES… The Concordia women lead the series 16-7 with Dordt winning in double overtime 96-86 after being tied 71-71 at the end of regulation.  Dordt was led by Kara Van Dyke with 27 points and Kayla Broekhuis added 21.  Jericca Pearson had 18 points and Tracy Peitz added 14 along with Kristen Conahan.

The Dordt men outscored Concordia 42-30 in the second half to win 79-66 over Concordia on January 5.  Trevor Wolterstorff had 20 and took in six rebounds with Cliff Warner scoring 17 and Jordan Vogel 16.  Concordia’s Joel Haywood scored 15 with Beau Smith and Porter Birtell striking for 11 each.  Dordt was 28-47 from the floor and had a 32-26 rebounding advantage.

BY THE NUMBERS…Several athletes have recently reached milestones in their careers.  Trevor Wolterstorff moved to no. 2 all time in scoring, passing Luke Ruter for the second slot and has 1,837 career points.  Jordan Vogel moved into the top-10 and has 1,281 points.  Cliff Warner is threatening to move into the top-20 and has 1,092 points for his career.  Wolterstorff and Vogel also rank 4th and 5th in rebounding  and Warner is 5th all-time in assists with 330.  Warner also became the all-time leader in three-pointers made with 212, passing Ruter with 211 in the Wednesday night win over Dakota Wesleyan.  Shawn Keizer is the all-time leader in games played with 123, passing Chad Huenink with 120 and Trevor Wolterstorff is the career leader in games started with 121, passing Logan Kingma with 115.

Brianna Spronk has 990 career points and is went over 600 rebounds with 610.  Kara Van Dyke is also closing in on 900 career points and has 888 currently.
