Dordt-Northwestern Square Off For Second Time This Season

GAMETIME… Dordt College will travel to Northwestern on Wednesday, January 30  in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball.  The women’s contest starts at 6:00 and the men will get underway at 8:00.   The games will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and at kdcr.dordt.edu. SCOUTING REPORT… The Northwestern women are 15-6 overall and 9-5 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference after splitting two games last week.  The Raiders were rated no.9 in the January 23 poll with five of their six losses coming to teams ranked in the top seven.  Northwestern has lost three out of five games from November 9-November 20.  Northwestern then went on a six game winning streak before losing to Concordia on January 2.  Northwestern is 4-3 in 2013.

Northwestern averages 76.4 points per game while allowing 60.9 points per outing and they hold a 39.1-30.5 rebounding advantage.  The Raiders have forced 439 turnovers while committing 402 of their own.  Northwestern converts 49.1 percent of its shots and they limit teams to 36.5 percent shooting.  Northwestern does not rely heavily on the three-point shot, having taken just 202 three-pointers and having made 62.

Kendra De Jong leads the team with 16.6 points per game and she grabs 9.3 rebounds while converting 53.7 percent of her field goals.  Samantha Kleinsasser is good for 14.8 points per game and has a 6.3 rebounding average.  Karen Hutson and Alli Dunkelberger round out the double digit scorers with 13.1 and 11.2 points per game respectively.  Dunkelberger leads the team in assists with 71 and De Jong has a team high 39 steals.  Northwestern has gotten credit for 403 assists on 606 total field goals.

The Red Raider men are 17-5 overall and 11-3 in the GPAC and were ranked no. 8 in NAIA basketball in the January 23 poll.  Northwestern opened the season with a loss to Valley City State and then reeled off seven wins in a row.  The Raiders are 8-2 since Christmas with losses to nationally rated William Penn and on the road at Morningside.

Kris Korver’s team is averaging 84 points per game and allow 72.3 points per contest.  The Raiders have outrebounded teams 42.4-30.8 and they are making 50.1 percent of their shots from the field and limit opponents to 40.5 shooting.  Northwestern has turned the ball over 322 times to 269 times for opponents.

Ben Miller has led Northwestern in his senior campaign with 18.2 points per game and 8.5 rebounds.  The Volga, South Dakota native is converting 53.1 percent of his field goals and tops the team with 101 assists and has 19 steals.  Daniel Van Kalsbeek, another senior, is averaging 14.0 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per outing while coming off the bench.  Zack Leeper adds 12.7 points per game and converts 39-116 three-point shots.  Stu Goslinga has scored 9.5 points and converts 61.6 percent of his field goals with 6.5 rebounds per contest.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 13-12 overall and 7-8 in the GPAC and have lost two games in a row.  The Defenders are 5-4 since Christmas and have won two games in a row on three different occasions and have lost three games in a row once and two games in a row once.

The Defenders have scored 69.3 points per game and allow 63 points per game while outrebounding teams 37.2-36.3.  The Defenders convert 40.8 percent of their field goals and limit teams to 39.3 shooting.  The Defenders have converted 163-462 three-point shots and have turned the ball over 491 times to 522 times for opponents.

Kara Van Dyke is good for 13.6 points per game and she is making 50.2 percent of her field goal tries while grabbing7.5 rebound and she has 40 assists with 28 blocked shots.  Kayla Broekhuis is good for 12.3 points per game and has made 49-131 three-point shots in 20 games played.  Brianna Spronk is averaging 10.9 points per game and she grabs 5.1 rebounds and she leads the team with 56 assists and 51 steals.  Elise Maresh is good for 9.4 points and 5.3 rebounds and Jasmin Schelhaas chips in with 7.2 points per game with 40 assists.  Danelle Boone contributes 6.4 points and is making 50 percent of her three-point tries (36-72).

The Defender men are 19-5 overall and 11-4 in the GPAC with five games remaining in the regular season.  The Defenders won six games in a row to start the season and are 8-2 since Christmas.  Dordt is currently on a three game winning streak. 

The Defenders average 79.8 points per game and allow opponents to make 67.7 points per contest.  The Defenders hold a 39.8-30.3 rebounding advantage and they make 49.9 percent of their field goals while teams are making 42.0 field goal tries against the Defenders.  The Defenders have made 373-555 free throws while opponents have made 274-391 free throw attempts. 

Cliff Warner has a 15.3 points per game average and has handed out 91 assists in 24 games played.  He has 29 steals and has converted 91-193 three-point shots this season for 47.2 percent success. Trevor Wolterstorff has a 13.9 points per game average to go with 6.8 rebounds per game.  Wolterstorff is converting 58.1 percent of his field goals and has 23 steals.  Jordan Vogel scores 12.1 points per game and grabs 4.8 rebounds while converting 62.6 percent of his field goals and has blocked 22 shots. Austin Katje has a 10.2 points per game average and has made 37-101 three-point shots.    Chris Sievers adds 9.3 points per game while Kyle Lindbergh’s average is 6.8 and Shawn Keizer is good for 4.9 per game.  Lindbergh is second on the team in rebounding with a 5.9 average. 

NEXT… Dordt will host Hastings on Saturday while Northwestern is scheduled to host Concordia on Saturday

LAST TIME… Northwestern lost to Hastings on Saturday, January 26, 76-63.  The Raiders trailed by one on the road at halftime 31-30 and committed 26 turnovers to15 for the hosts.  Northwestern held a 33-27 rebounding advantage and was led in scoring by Kendra De Jong with 16 points and Samantha Kleinsasser dumped in 15.  Alli Dunkelberger contributed 14 and Karen Hutson seven.

The Defender women lost an 88-67 decision to Briar Cliff on Saturday after trailing 32-31 at halftime.  The Defenders were led by Kara Van Dyke with 18 points and eight rebounds.  Kayla Broekhuis scored 16 and had six assists and two steals.  Brianna Spronk completed the double digit scoring with 10 and had eight rebounds. 

The Raider men scored a 90-78 win over Hastings on Saturday after trailing 39-33 at halftime.   Daniel Van Kalsbeek led the team with 19 points on 8-11 shooting from the field while Ben Miller had 14 points and 12 rebounds.  Rob Gill came off the bench to score 16 on 7-9 shooting.  Northwestern had a 33-25 rebounding advantage and made 71 percent of their shots in the second half.  Northwestern got 50 points from their bench in that win.
The Defender men held a 42-31 halftime edge and rolled to a 77-58 win on Saturday over Briar Cliff, limiting the hosts to 11-30 shooting in the second half.  Austin Katje led Dordt with 17 points and Jordan Vogel scored 16 with six rebounds.  Cliff Warner knocked down 14 points and had four assists.

SERIES… The Raider women lead the series 62-17 and won the December 5 meeting 71-51.  Dordt got 22 points from Kara Van Dyke in the loss and Northwestern was led by Kendra De Jong with 25 points and 12 rebounds.  Samantha Kleinsasser chipped in with 22 points and had eight rebounds.  Dordt committed 26 turnovers in that loss and Northwestern had a 43-30 rebounding advantage.  Northwestern led 37-26 at halftime.

The Defender men trail the overall series 75-26.  Dordt overcame a 33-26 halftime deficit to win the December 5 meeting 64-56.  Trevor Wolterstorff and Austin Katje had 19 and 16 points respectively for the winners while Ben Miller and Daniel Van Kalsbeek each had 14 for Northwestern.  Northwestern had a 39-36 rebounding edge and committed 14 turnovers to 15 for the Defenders.    The two teams have split the last 22 meetings evenly since the 2003-2004 season and Dordt holds a 4-1 advantage in the last five meetings.

NAIA NUMBERS…Danelle Boone tops the NAIA in three-point field goal shooting with 50 percent success.  Kendra De Jong is 5th in the NAIA in defensive rebounds per game with 6.7.  Samantha Kleinsasser is 7th in field goal percentage with 55.4.  Dordt ranks 13th in three-point percentage (35.3) and 18th in total steals (272).  Northwestern ranks first in the NAIA in field goal shooting (49.1) and third in assists per game (19.1).  They also rank 9th in rebounding margin (8.6).

Cliff Warner leads the NAIA in three-pointers made (91) and is 10th in three-point percentage (47.2).  Trevor Wolterstorff is 17th in field goal percentage (58.1).  Northwestern’s Ben Miller ranks 6th in defensive rebounds per game (6.9).  Dordt ranks 3rd as a team in field goal percentage (49.9) and 6th in rebounding margin (9.2).  The Defenders are 7th in offensive rebounds (954) and 15th in scoring margin (12.2).  Northwestern leads the country in rebounding margin (11.5) and is 2nd in field goal percentage (50.1). The Raiders are 5th in total rebounds (42.4) and are 18th in scoring margin (11.7).
