Dordt Hosts Mount Marty Tuesday

GAMETIME...The Dordt College basketball teams host Mount Marty on Tuesday, November 20 in GPAC play.  Start time is 6:00 for the women’s game with the men to follow at 8:00.  The games will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and there will be an audio and video webstream  available on the internet at  Results will be available at  and at when complete.

SCOUTING REPORT… Mount Marty’s women are 2-3 this season with wins over Oglala Lakota College and Grace and they have lost two in a row to the College of Saint Mary and Concordia leading into this game.  The Lancers are scoring 70.5 points per game with a defensive average of 60.5 and they outrebound teams 41.0-36.5.  The Lancers are converting 41.2 percent of their field goals while foes make 38.9 percent.  Opponents are turning the ball over nearly 25 times per game and Mount Marty is at 20 turnovers a game.

Taylor Forsch’s scoring average is at 17.0 points per game with four rebounds and Allison De Kam is good for 12.8 points per game with a team high 9.6 rebounding average.  Alexa Berg and Alyssa Whetham are averaging 6.6 and 5.8 points per game for a team that is playing 12 in its regular rotation.  Forsch has made 46.9 percent of her three-point shots (15-32).  Forsch also has taken a team high 14 free throws—tied for the honor with De Kam and Berg.  April Winne leads the team with over three assists per outing.

The Lancers are 3-3 this season and 0-1 in the GPAC with wins this season over Oglala Lakota, Grace and Clarke.  Mount Marty is averaging 72 points per game and allow 64.8 points per contest and have converted 45.8 percent of its field goals while surrendering 40.3 percent field goal shooting.  Rebounding is about even with the Lancers on the short end of a 35.7-35.0 average.

Joe Hieb scores 12.8 points per game and Salidin Smith is scoring 10.3 points per game with a 4.0 rebounding average.  Austin Harms and Jeff Larsen each average 7.8 points per game and Larsen is making nearly 60 percent of his field goals.  TJ Johnson is scoring 6.8 points per game and he takes down a team high 6.8 rebounds per game.  Scott Oderkirk leads the team with a 3.3 assists per game average.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and have won three of the last four games they have played after starting the season 0-3.  The Defenders are averaging 68.4 points per game and allow 56.1 points per contest while outrebounding teams 38.4-37.  Dordt is converting 40.4 percent of its field goals and 33.9 percent of its three-point opponents while limiting teams to 35.2 percent shooting and 26 percent success from the three-point arc.  Dordt has forced 166 turnovers through seven games while giving up 129 turnovers.

Kara Van Dyke is averaging 14.1 points per game with 8.1 rebounds and she converts 53.5 percent of her field goal attempts.  Kayla Broekhuis is averaging 14.5 points per game in two contests and has converted 8-15 three-point attempts and has three steals.  Brianna Spronk contributes 10.3 points per game and Elise Maresh is at 10.0 points per outing with 6.6 rebounds.  Spronk leads the team with 15 assists and Jasmin Schelhaas has 13 assists and is averaging 5.6 points per game.

The Defender men are 6-1 this season and 0-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  Dordt is averaging 83.4 points per game and allow 59.4 points per game.  The Defenders have outrebounded teams 41.7-31.3 and make 50.4 percent of their field goals while opponents are making 36.6 percent. 

Jordan Vogel tops the team with a 14.1 points per game scoring average and he nabs 5.9 rebounds per game.  Cliff Warner is scoring 13.9 points per game with 3.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.  Trevor Wolterstorff is good for 11.3 points and 5.6 rebounds and Austin Katje is converting 10.0 points per game.  Kyle Lindebergh is at 9.0 points per game and leads the team with 6.4 rebounds per outing.  Shawn Keizer is averaging just shy of double digits with a 9.0 averge and Chris Sievers contributes 7.8 points per game with 4.2 rebounds. 

NEXT… The Dordt women are scheduled to face York on the road this Saturday at 2:00 with the next women’s and men’s doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday, November 28 at Dakota Wesleyan.

Mount Marty will be off until Wednesday, November 28 when they host Northwestern.

LAST TIME… The Mount Marty women lost to no. 1 ranked Concordia on Saturday in Seward, Nebraska by a final of 91-61 after trailing 52-29 at halftime.  The lancers were led by Forsch with 11 points and Holly Hegge came off the bench to score 11.  Concordia won the rebounding battle 39-35 and also forced 29 Mount Marty turnovers.  De Kam led the team in rebounds with nine but also committed eight turnovers and she scored seven points.

The Defender women bet Doane 55-46 after leading 31-16 at  halftime.  Dordt held Doane scoreless for an eight minute stretch in the first half to build a 16-4 lead.  The Defenders made 18-49 field goals and held Doane to 16-52 while outrebounding the Tigers 41-31.  Elise Maresh scored 12 and Kayla Broekhuis knocked down ten while Jaimie Kok added ten.  Spronk scored nine and had 11 points and five steals.

The Lancer men lost a 66-63 decision to Concordia after trailing 32-31 at halftime.  The Lancers were outrebounded 40-32 and forced 16 turnovers while committing 13.  Joe Hieb had 15 points to pace the Lancers in the losing effort and Salidin Smith had 12 points and nine rebounds in 32 minutes of playing time.  Jeff Larsen came off the bench to score nine points and had seven rebounds while Austin Harms added eight points.

The Defenders allowed 60.4 percent shooting  from the field in an 86-70 loss on Saturday to Doane.  Dordt held a 34-29 rebounding edge and but converted just 38.8 percent shooting for the game.  The visitors were ahead by a 51-38 margin with 14:33 left in the game but the Tigers went on a scoring outburst of 48-19 to turn the 13 point deficit into the double digit win.  Cliff Warner had 23 points and Jordan Vogel added 21 on 8-10 shooting from the floor and 5-7 free throw shooting.  Trevor Wolterstorff added 11 points with eight rebounds and he had four steals.

SERIES…The Dordt women trail the series with Mount Marty 45-24 with the Lancers taking both meetings last season.  Mount Marty won the November 22 meeting in Yankton by a 69-63 margin.  Spronk had 18 points with five rebounds and Kara Van Dyke had 16 points and eight rebounds.  Kayla Gesink came off the bench to score ten in the loss.  The Lancers were led by Alexa Berg with 17 points and five rebounds and Kylie Gross added 14 points with five rebounds. 

The teams played again on January 18 in Sioux Center and Mount Marty prevailed 77-74 behind 24 points by Forsch.  Hannah Youngberg scored 15 and Kylie Gross had 12 points and 14 rebounds.  Kara Van Dyke scored 21 in the loss and Jaimie Kok added 15.  Dordt was outrebounded 38-26 in the game with Kayla Broekhuis taking down a team high six caroms.

Dordt trails the series in men’s play 49-46.  Dordt beat Mount Marty both times last year, winning an 85-70 decision in Yankton and forging a 70-56 win in Sioux Center on January 18.  Cliff Warner scored 27 points in the first game with Kyle Lindbergh adding 15 points and 11 rebounds.  Joe Hieb came off the bench to score a team high 14 for Mount Marty. 

The Defenders were led by Trevor Wolterstorff in the January meeting with 22 points on 9-12 shooting and Austin Katje added 16.  Scott Oderkirk and Hieb each had 14 off the bench.  Dordt held Mount Marty to 23-60 shooting from the floor and made 24-28 free throws to 8-9 for the Lancers.
