Defender Basketball Plays Pair In Orange City

WHEN AND WHERE...The Dordt College men’s basketball team is in Orange City for a pair of games this weekend when they play in a classic hosted by Northwestern.  The Defenders face Waldorf at 6:00 on Friday night and will meet AIB on Saturday at 2:00.  The Friday night game will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and will also be available on the internet at www.dordt.edu/athletics.  Updates of the Saturday game will be available at https://twitter.com/dcathletics and there will be score updates available during the football broadcast on KDCR.

SCOUTING REPORT… Waldorf is 0-2 this season with losses to Graceland and Briar Cliff last weekend.  The Warriors are allowing 84.5 points per game and score 69 points.  Waldorf is outrebounding teams 37-36 and convert 43.6 percent of its field goals while allowing opponents to convert 48.5 percent of its field goals.  Waldorf is making 22.2 percent of its field goals and have committed 16.5 turnovers per game.  Robert Burns scores 12.0 points per game while Erik Brewer and Kwamaine Johnson each score 11.5 points per outing with Johnson doing his damage off the bench.  Mitch Barrett-Burrell converts for nine points per game.  Brewer is the leading rebounder and is averaging six caroms.

AIB is 0-2 this year with losses to Peru State (84-78) and Graceland (83-68).  The Eagles have been outscored 83.5-73.0 in their two losses and have been outrebounded 36-29 on average so far this year.  The Eagles lean heavily on Brandon Eley with a 24.5 points per game average to go with 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists and 5.0 steals.  Jevaughn Threatt-Ray is at 12.5 points per game and Marcus Mechaelsen is scoring 10.5 points per outing.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defenders are 4-0 this season and have outscored teams by an 87.8-58.0 points per game average.  Dordt outrebounds teams 41-33.5 and makes 52.8 percent of the field goals attempted. 

Jordan Vogel averages 14.3 points per game with 6.0 rebounds and is making 75.8 percent of his field goals.  Austin Katje converts 14.0 points per game but hasn’t played since getting injured against Jamestown.  Cliff Warner knocks down 11.0 points per outing with three assists per game and he makes 43.5 percent of his three-point attempts.  Kyle Lindbergh has started the year with a 10.8 points per game average with 6.8 rebound, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals.  Shawn Keizer is averaging 9.8 points per game and is 10-18 on three-points shots and averages 4.0 rebounds.  Trevor Wolterstorff is putting in 9.3 points per game and Chris Sievers is at 8.0.

NEXT… Waldorf will play  Jamestown and Martin Luther next weekend at a classic hosted by Viterbo in Lacrosse, Wisconsin.

AIB is scheduled to face Graceland on November 13 in Lamoni before playing in a classic hosted by Peru State next weekend.

Dordt will be off until next weekend when it opens GPAC play on the road against Doane.

LAST TIME…Waldorf lot to Briar Cliff on Saturday 94-65 after getting down 34-28 at halftime.  Briar Cliff outscored the Warriors 60-37 in the second half.  Robert Burns had 14 points and Mitch Barrett-Burrell had 13 with seven rebounds.  Kwamaine Johnson scored 13 points off the bench.  Waldorf outrebounded the Chargers 41-37 but committed 19 turnovers while making 21-55 field goals for 38.2 percent.  Briar Cliff was 32-70 from the field for 45.7 percent success.

AIB lost to Graceland 83-68 after falling behind 38-29.  Graceland limited AIB to 25-56 shooting and got outrebounded 34-27.  Graceland shot 31-55 from the field for 56.4 percent.  Brandon Eley made 11-20 field goals including 6-9 three-point baskets for 28 points and he had four rebounds and four assists.  No one else had double digits in scoring.

Dordt rolled to a 90-43 win over Grace on Tuesday night, outscoring the Royals 46-15 in the second half.  Cliff Warner scored 24 points and Jordan Vogel had 12 points with four rebounds.  Nathan Rindels and Elliott Christians had ten points a piece. 

MILESTONES…A few Defenders are poised to pass some notable milestones this weekend.  Jordan Vogel has 986 career points and will become the 29th men’s basketball player at Dordt to pass 1,000 points.  Vogel also has 555 career rebounds and is within striking distance of Kevin Wolterstorff’s 559; Larry Louters’s 560 and Kevin Veenstra’s 562.  Veenstra is currently 13th all-time.  Trevor Wolterstorff is right behind with 540 reboudns and is 17th all-time.  He also has 1,496 career points and will become the sixth Defender to score more than 1,500 points in his career.  Kyle Lindbergh and Warner are both within striking distance of 100 career steals with 96 and 92 respectively.
