Blades Take On Ice Bears In Pair of Games

The puck drops at…7:30 pm on Friday, November 2nd as the Dordt Blades take on the Ice Bears from Missouri State University.  The two teams will play again on Saturday, November 3rd with the game time scheduled for 4:15 pm. 

“Who are they?”…the Ice Bears, who will be an official conference opponent  for the Dordt Blades starting in 2013, come in to Sioux Center with a record of  9-3.  Missouri State has two ACHA hockey programs, one in Division 2 and the D3 team which Dordt will compete against this weekend.

The Ice Bears have found the back of the opponents’ net 87 times (7.25 goals per game average) while giving up 31 (2.6 per game).

Richard Westcott is leading the Ice Bears in scoring with 10 goals and 4 assists for 14 points.  Alex Mundt (5 goals, 7 assists) and Ryan Gannon (3 goals, 9 assists) both have 12 points and Brian Leslie rounds out the double digit goals scorers with 11 points on 6 goals and 5 assists.

The Missouri State netminding has been spread out through 3 goaltenders.  Austin Hoglen has a 5.41 goals against average and a .860 save percentage in 3 games of work.  Keith Parker has also spent 3 games in goal, posting a 1.33 GAA and a .950 save percentage while Zachary Schmidt is 2-0 with a  1.50 GAA and a .950 save percentage.

All Ice Bears individual stats are based on 10 reported games.

The Blades…are returning to their home ice after playing their last 3 games on the road in Colorado.  Dordt College is a perfect 2-0 in their own "barn" with a pair of wins coming in the Vernon Arena against Kansas two weeks ago.

The Blades are 2-5 on the year and have 16 goals for and 25 against.

Eric Huitsing tops the point chart for Dordt College with 9 points on 3 goals and 6 assists.  Brandon Fast leads the Blades in goals with 4 to go along with 3 assist for 7 points and Nic Enerson has 5 points on 3 goals and 2 assists.  Four other Blades have 3 points.

Riley Braun has spent all 420 minutes in goal for the Blades and has a 3.57 goals against average and an impressive .915 save percentage.

Last time they met…the Blades and the Ice Bears last played each other on October 6, 2006 with Dordt College picking up a 3-2 win.

Last time out…A five goal outburst in the second period propelled Metro State University of Denver to an 8-4 win over the Blades .
The Blades skated evenly with the Roadrunners for the opening 20 minutes and the teams went in to the locker room deadlocked at 2-2.
Metro State tallied 5 straight in the second session to take a commanding 7-2 lead entering the final period. Jerome Rowell had the first 3 goals of the period to record the natural hat trick while Shane McGuiness and Dan Sheehan added the others.

Dordt managed to pull to within 3 with back to back goals by Huitsing and Postman in the final frame while Metro State added 1 for the 8-4 final.

After losing to the Iowa Hawkeyes on October 26 the Ice Bears responded with a dominated 6-0 win over Iowa the next day.

After This Weekend…the Blades will go on the road for a pair of games with the University of Iowa.  Friday, November 9 the Blades will play the Hawkeyes at 8:15 pm before returning to the ice for a 4:45 pm matinee with both games scheduled to take place in the Coral Ridge Ice Arena in Coralville, Iowa.

New conference affiliation…the Dordt Blades have joined the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA) which has schools in two separate divisions (Gold and Silver) and Dordt College will be a part of the Silver Division.  Western Conference schools include:
include:  Iowa, Iowa State, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Missouri State (D3), Kansas, Nebraska and Dordt.

The top two teams from the North, Central and West will make the playoffs, plus 2 wild card spots decided on winning percentage.  Lewis, Western Illinois, Nebraska and Dordt are all probationary teams and therefore will not be eligible for playoffs in 2012-2013.

The Coaches…Bill Elgersma returns for his fourth season behind the bench for the Blades.  Elgersma helped lead the Blades to their 3rd ACHA National Tournament appearance in 2009-2010.  Before taking over the reins in 2009-2010, Elgersma served as the assistant coach.

Assisting Elgersma again this season will be Adam Jeninga (6th year) and John Langeraap (4th year).
