Dordt Football Hosts Nebraska Wesleyan

THE FOE… Nebraska Wesleyan enters play with an 0-4 GPAC record and a 1-4 mark with a win over Saint Mary (Kansas) to start the season. The four losses in the league include a four point loss to Midland (7-3) and Northwestern (33-27). Wesleyan has been outscored 133-99 through five games.
Wesleyan has gained 351 yards on the ground through five games and have allowed 387 yards rushing. The Lincoln, Nebraska based school has 1,087 yards passing on 24 attempts and has allowed 1,205 yards. The Prairie Wolves have thrown eight interceptions and have taken away five.
Nate Hauptman has thrown for 725 yards on 58-131 passing with four touchdowns and seven interceptions. Tyler Francis is 37-72 passing for 339 yards and doesn’t have a touchdown pass while seeing time in four games. Dustin Bryant has run for 223 yards on 75 attempts and has rushed for two touchdowns. Jordan Delbaugh has 17 carries for 44 yards and he has caught 25 passes for 264 yards. Brad Pieper leads the team with two catches for touchdowns and has 15 receptions this season for a 17.7 yards per catch average.
Wesleyan is led on defense by Brett Kaczor with 30 solo and 27 assisted stops and has eight tackles for loss with one interception. Brandon Reeves has 23 solos and 13 assisted stops. Phil Latimer has three sacks and a fumble recovery. Cody Eiler tops the team with two interceptions.
THE DEFENDERS…The Defenders are 0-5 in the GPAC and 0-6 overall and are coming off a 45-31 loss to Dakota Wesleyan. Dordt has been outscored 219-93 this season through five games.
The Defenders have gained 1,448 yards on the ground while giving up 1,170 yards. Dordt has gained 705 yards in the air and teams have gained 1,545 yards in the air against Dordt. Dordt has thrown ten interceptions and has taken away four. Dordt has forced five fumbles and has lost nine.
Trai Pickney has 366 yards on the ground for an 8.5 yards per carry average and three touchdowns scored. Lenard Manuel has 246 yards on the ground and Daniel Fennig has 237 yards. Bryce Rusler has gained 213 yards and Josh Van Kempen 182. Kyle Henricks has 104 yards on 32 carries and has completed 35-66 passes for 552 yards and a touchdown.
David Griess has 15 catches for 171 yards and an 11.4 yards per catch. Pickney has 209 yards on 12 catches and Erin Francis has six catches for 141 yards.
Seth Vande Voort tops the Dordt defense with 34 solo and 26 assisted tackles with three tackles for loss. Vanoy Harris has 31 solo and 21 assisted stops and Ray Cleveland has made 26 solo tackles with 20 assisted stops and has a team high two interceptions. Sam Ashmore has 24 solo and 20 assisted tackles and 1.5 sacks.
THE LAST TIME THEY PLAYED… Wesleyan had a week off last week after suffering a 33-27 overtime loss to Northwestern. The Prairie Wolves managed to force overtime despite getting outgained 360-236 and gained just 22 yards on the ground. Francis was 19-38 in the air for 164 yards and Delbaugh caught eight balls for 66 yards. Reeves had 10 solo and three assisted tackles.
Dordt had a record setting performance in the 45-31 loss to Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, South Dakota on Saturday. The Defenders gained 441 yards on the ground and 250 yards in the air and outgained the hosts 691-546. Pickney ran for over 100 yards for the second game in a row and had 113 yards on 11 carries while Rusler had 88 yards on 16 carries before leaving the game with an injury. Fennig gained 87 yards on seven carries and Henricks ran for 62 yards. Manuel and Van Kampen had 50 and 43 yards respectively at fullback. Henricks passed for a school record 250 yards on 12-22 passing and Francis had four catches for 99 yards including a school record catch for 74 yards and a touchdown. Vanoy Harris had six solo and six assisted tackles and Seth Vande Voort had four and three. Ray Cleveland had two tackles for loss.
HISTORY… This will be the fifth meeting of the two teams with Wesleyan holding a 4-0 series lead since Dordt started its program. Dordt fell behind 28-7 last year at halftime in Lincoln after allowing three touchdowns in a five minute span late in the second quarter. Trai Pickney had a 63 yard run late in the game for a touchdown to make the final 45-19. Dordt was outgained 405-184. Pickney had 64 yards and Fennig 47. Wesleyan had two running backs go for 53 and 55 yards and Ethan Meyers completed 15-23 passes for 148 yards. Joe Manley had three catches for 63 yards.
Sam Ashmore had four solo and 12 assisted tackles and forced a fumble. Todd Green had seven solo and six assisted stops for the Defenders and Aaron Hicks had two interceptions. Sheldon Bouwens led Wesleyan with three solo and three assisted tackles and Taylor Tekolste had two sacks.
AROUND THE CORNER… Nebraska Wesleyan will be at home against Concordia on Saturday, October 20. The Defenders will host Dakota State in non-conference play next Saturday as well in a 1:00 kickoff.
