Blades Open Hockey Season in Michigan

A NEW YEAR…dawns for the Dordt College Blades as they begin their 2012-2013 season with a trio of games in Grand Rapids, Michigan this weekend (October 5 and 6). The Blades will skate against Aquinas College on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. (October 5) and Calvin College on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. (October 6) as part of the Calvin College Invitational.  The Blades will squeeze in a third game between that pair of contests when they face off against Redeemer University (Ontario, Canada )at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. In all, the Blades will play a 22 game schedule this year.

THE BLADES…Dordt College is coming off of a 6-17-2-1 season in 2011-2012 and begin the 2012-2013 campaign as a probationary member of the Mid-America College Hockey Association (MACHA). 

The Blades have reason to be optimistic about the year as they return 4 of their top 5 point getters from last season in Brandon Fast, Eric Huisting, Eric Grootenboer and Andrew De Young.  Forward Brandon Fast (Windom, MN) finished his junior year as the top point earner for Dordt with 28 points on 13 goals and a team high 15 assists.  Eric Huitsing (Edmonton, Alberta) ended last season with team high honors in goals with 17 to go along with 10 helpers for 27 points. Eric Grootenboer (Chatham, Ontario) and Andrew De Young (Sioux Center, Iowa) both added 13 points for the Blades last season with Grootenboer’s points coming on 10 goals and 3 assists while De Young had 2 goals and 11 assists.  Also returning for a final year for the Dordt Blades is 5th year senior defenseman Jon Gesink (Centennial, Colorado) who contributed 4 goals and 5 assists last season.

Junior netminder Riley Braun (Altona, Manitoba) will return to duty between the pipes after spending over 1100 minutes in goal last season, ending the year with 589 saves and a .873 save percentage.

Head Coach Bill Elgersma will begin his 4th season behind the bench for the Dordt College Blades and he will be assisted by John Langeraap and Adam Jeninga.

THE WEEKEND OPPONENTS...Aquinas College opens its inaugural season with their matchup against the Dordt Blades and will compete in the Michigan Collegiate Athletic Conference.  The Saints are located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Redeemer University…is located in Ancaster, Ontario and offers hockey as an extramural sport and will play Dordt in a “friendly” on Saturday morning (October 6) at 7:30 a.m.  Statistics from this past season were unavailable and Dordt College has not competed against the Royals since the mid ‘90s.

Calvin College… ended last season with a record of 12-14-1 and will play Redeemer on Friday evening before skating against Dordt on Saturday night.  The Knights and Dordt played each other in 2008 and again in 2009 with Calvin taking both of those contests, with the most recent game resulting in an 8-3 Calvin win on October 23, 2009 in Sioux Center.

AFTER THIS…the Blades will take to their home ice in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center on October 19 and 20 with games against Kansas at 7:30 PM on Friday night and again at 4:15 PM on Saturday. These games will be part of Parent’s Weekend at Dordt College.
