Dordt-Briar Cliff Football Clash Saturday

THE FOE…Briar Cliff enters the game with an 0-3 GPAC record and an 0-4 overall mark.  The Chargers have lost a non-conference game to Graceland 24-17 and have lost their three GPAC games to Hastings, Doane and Dakota Wesleyan by a combined 34 points.

The Chargers have scored at least 13 points in each of their four games but have surrendered at least 24 points in those games.  Briar Cliff has been outscored 123-82 through four games and has been outgained 918-484 on the ground.  The Chargers have passed for 1,127 yards through four games and have allowed 703 yards.

PJ Quiroga is 59-99 in the air for 727 yards in four games played.  Kevin Van Egdom is 29-54 for 400 yrds.  Quiroga has thrown five touchdown passes and one interception and Van Egdom has two touchdowns.  Bryce Harshman has caught 24 passes for 403 yards and five touchdowns.  Michael Becker has 18 catches for 207 yards and Brett Van Muyden has 13 catches for 150 yards.

Jared Williams has 68 rushing attempts for 256 yards and he has scored twice.  Robert Wilson has 35 rushes for 97 yards.

Rusty Muncy has punted 14 times for a 32.4 average.

Marcell Moody tops the team with 26 solo tackles and 20 assisted stops.  Alfred Vizcarra has 15 solo tackles and Jordan Lester 12.  Four different players; Vizcarra, Lester, Josh Block and Marquet Harper each have one interception. The Chargers have one quarterback sack this season and that’s  by Block.

THE DEFENDERS…Dordt is 0-4 this season and 0-3 in GPAC play.  Dordt has been outscored 141-33 this season and have been outgained 1744-1066.  Turnovers have created problems for the Defenders this season with 10 interceptions thrown and five fumbles lost.  Opponents have turned it over four times by interception and three fumbles.

Lenard Manuel leads a Dordt rushing attack that averages just under 200 yards per game.  Manuel has 168 yards on 25 carries and Trai Pickney has 23 rushes for 149 yards.  Daniel Fennig has 19 rushing attempts with a 5.2 yards per carry average.

Kyle Henricks is 17-34 in the air for 205 yards and he has rushed for two touchdowns.  Bryce Rusler  is 11-48 for 83 yards.  David Griess has caught ten passes for 89 yards with Trai Pickney catching six for 82 yards.  Pickney also has five kick returns for 107 yards—a 21.4 average and Fennig has four returns for 14.5 yards per return.
Raymond Cleveland has 21 solo tackles and two interceptions.  Seth Vande Voort and Sam Ashmore each have 20 solo stops and Ashmore has a sack.  Vanoy Harris has 18 solo tackles while Anthony Hallum and Josh Nollmeyer both have 13 solo tackles and they each have two interceptions.

THE LAST TIME THEY PLAYED… Briar Cliff lost a 34-24 decision to Hastings on Saturday at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.  Briar Cliff scored 21 points late to cut a 24-3 deficit to the final of 34-24.  Briar Cliff outgained Hastings 473-424, passing for 413 yards.  Quiroga was 30-40 for 413 yards with three touchdowns.  Moody had eight solo tackles and assisted on four.

Dordt had a difficult second quarter against Concordia on Saturday, allowing 31 points to trail 38-0 at halftime.  Dordt got second half touchdowns from Kyle Henricks on a four yard run and a Trai Pickney one yard run to make the final 52-12.  Dordt was outgained 361-245 and had 178 yards on the ground.  Pickney ran for 55 and Manuel 41.  Henricks was 6-12 in the air for 58 yards.  Ray Cleveland had nine solo tackles.

HISTORY… Briar Cliff has won all four meetings between the two teams.  Last year’s game was won by Briar Cliff 16-10 in overtime.  Dordt scored the first ten points of the game, leading 10-0 into the fourth quarter when Briar Cliff scored a touchdown and field goal.  The Chargers won it with an interception on Dordt’s possession and a 13 yard touchdown run on their possession.  Daniel Fennig ran for 109 yards in the loss while David Griess had five catches for 52 yards and Sam Du Mez three for 34 yards.  Jared Williams ran for 155 yards on 34 carries and Bryce Harshman had three catches for 34 yards.

AROUND THE CORNER… Dordt travels to Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday, October 6 while Briar Cliff will host Concordia.
