Dordt Cross Country In Twin Cities Saturday

Meet Time…The Dordt College Defender cross country teams will travel to St. Paul, Minnesota to run in the Roy Griak Invite on Saturday, September 29.  The Defenders will run in the Division II race on a day when a total of 10 races will be run at the Les Bolstad Golf Course located at 2275 Larpeunter Ave. West, St. Paul, Minnesota.

Participants… A full list of teams competing is currently unavailable.  Last year 270 runners representing 22 teams competed in the women’s race and 322 runners took part in the men’s race with 27 teams competing.  As of Monday the women's field will feature 39 teams in the Division II race and 460 individuals.  The men's Division II race will have runners representing 47 teams and 479 runners.

Last Year… The Dordt College Defender women placed 12th out of 22 teams at the Roy Griak Invite hosted by the University of Minnesota at the Les Bolstad Golf Course on Saturday, September 24.

Dordt totaled 325 points on a day when the University of Mary won the event with 58 points.

Michelle Steiger was the first Defender across with a time of 23:54 and Renee Buikema was next in 23:58. The two were 46th and 48th respectively. Lillie Koerner and Merissa Harkema took 66th and 70th with times of 24:19 and 24;21 respectively. Lauren Opp was the fifth counter for the Defenders with a time of 25:05 for 95th place.

The event was run on a 6,000 meter course and was won by Courtney Schall competing unattached with a time of 21:38.

The Dordt College men's cross country team placed 18th out of 27 teams at the Roy Griak Invite in St. Paul, Minnesota on Saturday, September 24.

The Defenders were led by Ryan Tholen with a time of 26:57 for 59th place. Nathan Jackson was next with a 77th place finish of 27:16 and Eric Tudor claimed 85th iwth a time of 27:26. Tim Bierma and Derek Opp were next across the line for the Defenders with times of 27:51 and 28:19 respectively and counted for 105th and 132nd place overall.

Dordt totaled 458 points with Central Missouri winning the event that was run at the Les Bolstad Golf Course with a total of 90 points. Stanley Kabenei, competing for Iowa Central, won the 322 runner event with a time of 24:38.

Last Time… The Dordt College women finished ninth at the Woody Greeno Invite in Lincoln, Nebraska with 282 team points. The Defenders were the top NAIA finishing team at the 32 team event.

Dordt's first runner across was Merissa Harkema with a time of 23:23 for 38th place. Katie Bonnema clocked a 23:28 for 40th and Lauren Opp was 47th with a time of 23:34. Abby De Vries ran a 24:01 for 76th place and Renee Buikema was Dordt's final counter with a 24:06 and 81st place. Kayla Byl and Kaylie Ogle were the pushers with times of 24:19 and 25:51 respectively.

Air Force won the team title with a 47 and Laura Galvan of Kansas State had a 21:10 for first place.
289 runners competed on the 6,000 meter course.

The Dordt College Defender men's cross country team finished ninth in the 23 team college division at the Woody Greeno Invite in Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday, September 15.

Dordt totaled 309 points for ninth while Colorado School of Mines had 25 points to win the division.

Dordt was led by Ryan Tholen with a 27:14 for 43rd place and Tim Bierma ran a 27:35 for 59th. Nathan Jackson and Trent Kischer ran 27:36 and 27:57 respectively for 61st and 72nd and Chris Postma was right behind with a 27:59 for 74th. Derek Opp and Jake Byma were the sixth and seventh for Dordt with times of 28:11 and 28:28.
306 runners competed on the 8,000 meter course.

Poll…the Defender women continue to draw the attention of the voters as they moved to #13 in the NAIA National Poll released on Wednesday, September 19.

Next…The Defender cross country teams will be running at the Briar Cliff Invite on Saturday, October 6 in their next competition.
