Dordt Football At Midland Saturday

THE FOE…Midland is 1-0 this season and that was a conference win over Nebraska Wesleyan.  Dominic Blood had 13 rushes for 36 yards and Kene Martin had 14 carries for 24 yards.  Lane Heinert is the punter and has a 38.6 average after ten punts.  Clete Vrbka leads the defense and has five solo and three assisted tackles after one game while Josh Hutchison has four solo tackles and two assists.

Josh Gehring is in his first year at Midland after taking the reins from Casey Thiele.  Gehring was an offensive coordinator at Morningside for several seasons and was most recently at Wisconsin-Whitewater before taking the head coaching post in Fremont, Nebraska.

THE DEFENDERS…Dordt is 0-2 this season and 0-1 in the GPAC after losses to Waldorf and Hastings to start the season.  The Defenders have gained 407 yards on the ground and 123 yards in the air this season while the defense has surrendered 482 yards on the ground and 241 yards in the air.  Dordt has given up three interceptions and three fumbles while opponents have given the football up three times by interception and twice by fumble.

Bryce Rusler has gained 99 yards on 35 carries while Courtney Samuel has gained 92 yards on 17 carries.  Lenard Manuel, pressed into action on Saturday at running back, has 71 yards gained on six carries.  Trai Pickney has 13 carries for 64 yards.  Josh Van Kempen and Daniel Fennig each have seven carries for 44 and 42 yards each.  Rusler has completed eight passes for 55 yards and Kyle Henricks has six completions for 68 yards.  Pickney and Griess each have four catches for 40 and 33 yards a piece.

Darryl Van Grouw handles the punting chores and has 15 punts for a 39.3 average.

Seth Vande Voort tops the team with 13 solo and five assisted tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss.  Vanoy Harris has 11 solo and three assisted tackles and Sam Ashmore is at 10 and four.  Anthony Hallum, Raymond Cleveland and Josh Nollmeyer all have one interception.

THE LAST TIME THEY PLAYED… The Midland Warriors made a touchdown in the second quarter stand up in their season opening win over the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves on Saturday, September 8.  The Warriors scored on a six play, 73 yard drive with 7:54 left in the first half on a Lee Horky to Jesse Spangler four yard pass.  A field goal by Wesleyan later in the quarter was all the offense the Warriors allowed.

Midland was outgained 211-92 in the win and managed just five first downs and converted 1-16 third down tries.  The Warriors had 32 yards on the ground and 60 yards passing.  Clete Vrbka made five solo and three assisted tackles and Josh Hutchinson had an interception.  Lee Horky completed 4-14 passes for 60 yards with a long of 36.  Kene Martin and Kail Walker each had two grabs in the win with Walker getting 64 yards.  Only one other pass went for positive yardage for the Warriors.

The Dordt College Defender football team lost its home opener on Saturday, September 8 by a 20-7 margin to the Hastings College Broncos.

Dordt hung close early when Hastings fumbled a football out of the end zone on its first possession and Anthony Hallum made an interception at the goal line in the second quarter to turn the Broncos away twice.

Hastings scored its first touchdown at the 8:45 mark when Trevor Bohn caught a 49 yard pass from John Dostal on the first play of the drive. Bohn was on the receiving end of a 22 yard pass play in the second quarter that made it 14-0 with 8:25 left in the second quarter.

The Defenders had a scoring opportunity late in the second quarter when they made it to the Hastings 22 and tried a field goal that was short. Hastings also missed a field goal late in the half when the Dordt defense stopped the Broncos at the 21 yard line.

The third quarter was scoreless with Dordt making it as deep as the Hastings 20 before turning the ball over on downs on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Hastings put the game out of reach with a touchdown pass to Tyler Mertens that went 51 yards on the third play of a 54 yard drive with 1:58 remaining.

Dordt got on the board late in the game when Kyle Henricks engineered an eight play, 75 yard drive, capped by a 13 yard touchdown run by Josh Van Kempen with 00:30 left. Henricks completed five of six pass attempts on the drive to five different players.

Dordt was outgained 432-246 while gaining 176 yards on the ground and 70 in the air. Hastings gained 151 yards on the ground and had 281 yards off passes.

Lenard Manuel had six carries for 71 yards including a long of 49 yards. Josh Van Kempen had 44 yards on seven carries with a touchdown. Trai Pickney caught two passes for 29 yards and Darryl Van Grouw had one for 21 yards. Van Grouw also punted six times for a 44.7 average.

Seth Vande Voort had nine solo and two assisted stops and Vanoy Harris had seven solos and two assisted stops. Sam Ashore had six solo tackles and two assists with three tackles for loss and a quarterback sack. Ray Cleveland got credit for a forced fumble and broke up a pass with four solo tackles.

Hastings was led by Keenan Ballage with 100 yards of rushing with 16 carries and John Dostal completed 18-27 passes for 281 yards. Trevor Bohne had six catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns.

HISTORY… Dordt and Midland have played four times with Midland taking all four contests.  Last year’s game in Sioux Center on September 17 resulted in a 37-14 win for the Warriors.  Dordt tied the game with a 15 yard reception from Josh Van Kempen late in the first quarter and they cut a 21-7 lead down to 21-14 at halftime when Van Kempen again got into the end zone off a pass from Justin Knot.  Midland pulled away in the second half with 16 points on two touchdowns and a safety.

Midland outgained Dordt 507-233 and gained 279 yards on the ground and 228 in the air.  Antony Johnson had 143 yards of rushing offense on 17 carries and Khalid Waters had 76 yards on 22 carries.  Dordt had 72 yards on 23 carries from Lenard Manuel and Justin Knot completed 8-17 passes for 77 yards while Chandler Kurth was 6-12 for 39 yards.  Jon Luetchens led the Dordt defense with five solo and five assisted stops with an interception. James Rowenhorst and Brice Kroeze each had interceptions as well and Seth Vande Voort was in o four solo and seven assisted tackles.

AROUND THE CORNER…Dordt will travel next weekend when they face Concordia in Seward, Nebraska in a 1:00 start while Midland goes on the road next Saturday as well to face Morningside in a 1:00 kickoff.
