Dordt Soccer Hosts Avila and Missouri Baptist

GAMETIME… Dordt is scheduled to play a pair of non-conference soccer doubleheaders against Avila (Kansas) and Missouri Baptist on Friday, September 7 and Saturday, September 8. The Friday games start with the women’s game at 3:00 followed by the men’s contest while the Saturday games get underway at 1:00 with the women’s game. The games can be heard on a webcast at www.dordt.edu/athletics.
SCOUTING REPORT… The Avila women are 2-2 this season. The Eagles are even in scoring with opponents with nine goals each and they are even in shots on goal with 25 apiece. Mollie Brown and Alyssa D’Egidio each have two goals and Laurel Lujano has three assists. Steph Gartner has allowed nine goals in 342 minutes for a 2.36 average.
The Avila men are 1-3, getting its win over Briar Cliff last weekend 4-0. Avila has been outscored 9-5 and outshot on goal 32-17. Daniel Adams has two goals and Felipe Garcia two assists. Pedro Vargas has been in goal for 336 minutes and has allowed nine goals for a 2.4 average.
The Missouri Baptist women are 1-4 with a win over Milligan (Tennessee) on August 31, 3-0. Missouri Baptist has been outscored 13-6 this season and has been outshot on goal 53-25. Megan Huffman has three goals to lead and Anna Recer has two. Sam Schulze has played 444 minutes in goal with 12 goals allowed for a 2.43 average.
The Missouri Baptist men are 1-4 this season with the win coming over Roosevelt (Illinois) in their most recent outing. They’ve been outscored 12-6 so far this season and have been outshot on goal 53-23. Danny Traylor is tops on the team with four goals and no one has more than one assists.
DORDT COLLEGE NOTES…The Dordt College women are 0-1-1 this season. Dordt’s been outscored 7-4 this year and have been outshot 27-13 on goal. Allison Hogan has two of Dordt’s goals and an assist. Katie Kortman has played 200 minutes in goal and has 20 saves and a 3.15 goals allowed average.
The Dordt men are 2-0 and have outscored teams 8-3 while outshooting teams 29-12 so far this year. Scotty Van Wylen, Josh Brinkerhoff and Steven Talsma all have two goals this season and Brady Van Holland has two assists. Jon Brinkherhoff has a 1.42 goals allowed average and has recorded nine saves in the first two games.
THE SERIES…These teams played last year with the Dordt women losing a pair of tight contests. Avila turned the Defenders away 2-0 while outshooting the Defenders 9-1. Missouri Baptist scored two early goals and those stood up in a 2-1 decision. Katie Kortman made three saves and Tara Postma had a goal in the 50th minute to cut a 2-0 lead down to the final of 2-1.
The Defenders came home from these two contests with a pair of 2-1 wins. Dordt dropped Avila while scoring the last two goals of the game on a Josh Brinkherhoff counter in the 58th minute and a David Miedema goal in the 79th minute. The Missouri Baptist win came with Scott Van Wylen scoring in the 87th minute to unlock a 1-1 tie.
LAST TIME… The Avila women lost to Ottawa on September 2 by a 2-1 margin, getting outshot 7-5 on goal. Amy Anderson had Avila’s goal I the 70th minute.
The Avila men lost to Ottawa 2-0 on Saturday while getting outshot 11-4. Vargas made eight saves in goal.
Missouri Baptist lost to McKendree 2-0 on Sunday in women’s play and were outshot 10-3.
Danny Traylor scored two goals to lead Missouri Baptist to a 2-0 win over Roosevelt on Sunday.
The Dordt women lost a 4-1 decision to St. Francis on Saturday. The visitors scored all of their goals from the ten minute mark to 27 minute mark of the first half. Dordt’s goal came in the 33rd minute on a Tara Postma shot. Katie Kortman faced 16 shots on goal and made 12 saves.
The Dordt men were 2-1 overtime winners over Trinity Christian last Saturday, getting the game winner from Derick Sackey just under five minutes into the first overtime. Dordt outshot the Trolls by a 13-6 margin and Brinkherhoff had five saves.
NEXT UP…… Avila will face Midland in Fremont, Nebraska on Sunday, September 9.
Both Missouri Baptist teams will host Central Methodist on September 12.
