Dordt Ag Club takes third place in National College Bowl

March 27, 2012

For the Dordt College Ag Club, “Walking the Fields of Opportunity” was a fitting theme for this year’s National Postsecondary Agricultural Student (PAS) Conference as students seized the opportunity to show what they knew, resulting in a third-place victory in the National College Bowl competition.

Dordt’s College Bowl team placed ahead of all other Iowa colleges and universities. The Dordt team was defeated in the semifinal round by the Crowder College (Missouri) team, which went on to become the national winner.

The Dordt Ag Club has been a member of the Iowa PAS for two years but participated for the first time this year. “Our students found that they are prepared to compete with anyone in the country,” said Gary De Vries, Dordt College professor of agriculture.

Five students represented Dordt College on March 14 through 17 in Des Moines, Iowa, competing in College Bowl, Dairy Specialty, Crop Specialty, and Employment Interview competitions. These students are freshman Brock Brenneman of Parnell, Iowa; junior Erin Davelaar (team captain) of Brandon, South Dakota; junior Drew De Vries of Maurice, Iowa; sophomore Vernon Oostra of Hull, Iowa; and senior Tyler Woodward of Hamburg, Iowa.

Other top finishes included De Vries’ 5th place standing in the employment interview livestock production competition and Oostra’s 7th place standing in the employment interview dairy production competition.

More than 600 agriculture students competed in specialty and employment competitions, listened to speakers, and participated in leadership workshops, and more than 30 teams competed in College Bowl.
