March 26, 2012

Nine Dordt College vocal students were semifinalists and six received highest honors at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition held at Dordt College on March 30.

“Dordt typically does well at this competition, but these numbers are outstanding,” said Pam De Haan. “Our students have both good work ethic and talent. I am quite honored to work with our students.”

Jon Hageman (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Marina Jelsma (Sioux Center, Iowa), and Carolyn Van Der Aa (Byron Center, Mich.) were semi-finalists. Maria Bouwkamp (Pella, Iowa), Sam De Groot (Sioux Center, Iowa), Emily Hageman (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Joy Roelofs (Tyler, Minn.), Lisa Smith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), and David Visser (Oskaloosa, Iowa) went on to perform in the Honors Recital, which is the highest honor awarded at the competition.

Ten vocal teachers sent students to compete at NATS, and in all, about 50 students competed from throughout the region.
