Dordt students present music recitals

March 27, 2012

Four Dordt College music students will present junior and senior recitals in the B.J. Haan throughout March.

Friday, March 23, 3 p.m. Senior Jonathan Posthuma from Brandon, Wisconsin, will perform a full hour of original music composed for a variety of instruments including piano, marimba, vibraphone, and bells.

Joining him will be junior Rachel Vande Griend on flute, sophomore Kristen Raygor on tenor saxophone, and vocalists senior Emily Hageman and junior Maria Bouwkamp.

Posthuma is a music major with emphases in choral and instrumental education and secondary education, and a minor in the Kuyper Scholars Program. He is the recipient of the 59th BMI Student Composer Award for his composition Five Studies for Piano. This is Posthuma’s second composition recital at Dordt College. Luke Dahn is his private instructor.

Saturday, March 24, 7:30 p.m. Senior Jason Friend and junior Dale Matthias will present a joint music recital. Friend, from Zillah, Washington, is a pianist, and Matthias, from Sumner, Iowa, is an organist.

Friend will perform works by well-known composers including Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Gershwin. Joining him for an exciting two-piano duet will be senior Krysta Wright.

Friend is an engineering science major and is in the pre-architecture program at Dordt College. He is a recipient of the Ringerwole Organ Scholarship and the Bloemendaal Organ Scholarship. MaryLou Wielenga is private instructor.

Matthias will perform repertoire from the baroque and romantic periods. He is a political studies major with a minor in music performance. Matthew Geerlings is private instructor.

Friday, March 30, 7:30 p.m. Senior Krysta Wright from Holmen, Wisconsin, will present a piano recital. She will be accompanied by pianist Jason Friend.

“Out of all the pieces I am playing, I love The Tempest Sonata by Beethoven because it is powerful and compelling, yet beautiful and serene at the same time,” said Wright.

Wright is a music major with an emphasis in piano performance and pedagogy at Dordt College. MaryLou Wielenga is her private instructor.
