Youth invited to Brain Awareness Day

March 8, 2003

Brain Awareness Week will be observed with hands-on youth activities at the Science and Technology Center on the Dordt campus on Saturday, March 15, 9 a.m.-noon.

Students in grades 5 and up are invited to the free event hosted by biology students at Dordt College. Participants will have the opportunity to dissect a sheep brain, do a computer 3-D visualization of the brain, use a microscope and examine a model of the human brain. They’ll also have the opportunity to examine cow eyes and learn how visual systems activate the brain.

In room S108 at 9:30 a.m., Dr. Dale Nystrom, a medical doctor at Sioux Center, will explain how nerves communicate. At 11 a.m., Dan Hitchcock, assistant professor of psychology at Dordt College, will talk about babies’ brains and the autonomic nervous system.

Pre-registration is not required and there is no cost to attend. For more information, contact Tony Jelsma at 722-6278. Dordt College, Sioux Center, offers over 50 areas of study along with a graduate program in education.
