Calvin College president gives Convocation address at Dordt College
January 9, 2012
“Academia Coram Deo,” a Latin phrase best translated as “Academics in the presence of God,” is the topic of the spring semester’s Convocation address at Dordt College. The address will be given by Calvin College President Dr. Gaylen Byker at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 13, in the B.J. Haan Auditorium on the campus of Dordt College.
Byker is a graduate of Calvin College and since 1995 he has served as the school’s eighth president. Before assuming his role at Calvin, Byker worked as vice president for development and hedging with the Offshore Energy Development Corporation in Houston, Texas. He also worked for Chase (Manhattan) Investment Bank in New York as a manager of commodity-indexed swaps and financing, and he has practiced law.
Byker will be retiring as the president of Calvin College at the end of this academic year.
Dordt College President Dr. Carl E. Zylstra also announced plans to retire from his position following the 2011-12 academic year. Updates and progress on the search process can be found at www.dordt.edu/presidentialsearch.
Following the Convocation ceremony, all are invited to a reception in the president’s suite on the third floor of the Campus Center for a time of fellowship with Presidents Byker and Zylstra.
