Whet your appetite with Summer Picnic posters on display at Dordt College

August 15, 2011

It’s summer in the Dordt College Art Gallery where vibrant and bold posters featuring hotdogs, sweet corn, seven-layer salad, and lemonade are on display. The famous Herman Miller Summer Picnic poster collection featuring the works of Steve Frykholm is on display until October 2. The community is welcome to view the exhibit free every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

In 1970, Steve Frykholm’s first task as graphic designer at Herman Miller was to design a poster for the annual company picnic. The result was a unique and captivating piece featuring bold colors, 10 tiny words, and a single ear of sweet corn. This piece is one of the 20 large Summer Picnic posters displayed in the Campus Center gallery.

Art Professor David Versluis says he is pleased to feature this type of exhibit. “This show is a great opportunity to showcase a wonderful body of graphic communication work designed by an internationally renowned designer.”

Frykholm has worked for the Herman Miller company for over 40 years and is the creative director and vice president of design. His work has been widely published and included in exhibition in the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the Danish Museum of Art and Design in Copenhagen. Several of his Summer Picnic posters are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. The pieces on display at Dordt College have been provided from the Roger and Jeanne Knop collection of Muskegon, Mich.

Herman Miller is an award-winning furniture company based in Zeeland, Mich. Herman Miller owns Nemschoff which has a plant in Sioux Center.
