Dordt College library director appointed to Iowa Library Services
July 29, 2011
Sheryl Sheeres Taylor has a love for learning and a passion for enriching Iowa’s libraries, especially Dordt College’s Hulst Library. Taylor has served in a variety of positions within the Dordt library since 1992, including interlibrary loan officer, college librarian, and currently as library director. But her reach extends beyond Dordt’s academic library; she has been selected to serve on the Iowa Library Services Advisory Panel.
The advisory panel was created following a state library restructuring bill passed by the Iowa legislature which combined the state library and its service areas into one unified organization called the Iowa Library Services (ILS).
State Librarian Mary Wegner said of ILS that “one of the main purposes of the new agency is to work with Iowa libraries of all types and all sizes to make library service in Iowa the best it can be.”
The bill commissions the advisory panel to advise and recommend evidence-based best practices, to assist the commission and division in determining service priorities and launching programs, to articulate the needs and interests of Iowa librarians, and to share research and professional development information.
ILS will continue to provide services and support for all Iowa libraries, including state and private academic libraries. State programs such as Access Plus, an interlibrary loan-sharing system, and other reimbursement plans have helped foster cooperation between all libraries in Iowa and have given residents easy access to items from any library in the state.
Taylor has found these programs to be a great benefit to the college and the community. “I’m very happy to be on the advisory panel because I feel that it’s a way that I can give back to the state library for all the support and the benefits they have given to Dordt,” said Taylor.
Taylor has also recently served as vice-chair, chair, and past-chair for the Iowa Private Academic Libraries; on the planning committee for both the Association of Christian Librarians and the Christian Coalition for Colleges and Universities Library Directors’ Institute; and has served as an academic mentor for the Association of College and Research Libraries.
