May 28, 2011

Josiah Luttjeboer claimed third place and the Dordt men's 4 x 400 meter relay team placed fourth at the NAIA Track and Field National Championships held at Marion, Indiana.  The athletes completed the feat on the last day of the three-day meet, Saturday, May 28.

Luttjeboer, a senior from Belleville, Ontario, got stronger in each stage of the 800 meters, running a 1:52.61 in the prelims on Thursday; a 1:51.40 in the semifinals on Friday; and he blazed to a 1:50.35 in the finals Saturday afternoon for third place.  The winning time in the event was a 1:49.56 run by Silas Kisorio from Oklahoma Christian.

Luttjeboer than helped cap the weekend with an anchor carry on the 4 x 400 relay that finished the meet.  The Defenders ran a 3:10.23 for fourth with Alex Henderson (Junior; Mesquite, Texas), Andrew Grove (Freshman; Iowa City, Iowa) and Nic Pfeifle (Sophomore; Edgerton, Minnesota) making up the foursome.  The Defenders set a new school record with the time, bettering their semifinal time of 3:10.46.

Top-eight finishers at the National Championships are declared NAIA All-Americans.

The meet was delayed on Saturday by more than two hours because of bad weather.

The Defenders are coached by Dr. Craig Heynen.
