Dordt presents Americana: A Celebration of American Choral Music

April 25, 2011

The final Dordt College Choral Ensembles concert of the academic year will be held on Saturday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. Ensembles include the Concert Choir, Chorale, and Kantorei performing Americana pieces in celebration of American choral music.

“A recurrent thread through the concert will be tunes taken from the 1835 compilation, ‘The Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion,’” said Dr. Benjamin Kornelis, Dordt College choir director. “Each of the choirs will sing something from this significant publication, including a powerful conclusion with massed choirs, brass, and organ performing Paul Halley’s arrangement of ‘Wondrous Love.’”

Performances will include the folksong Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier arranged by DeCormier, Saints Bound for Heaven arranged by Parker and Shaw, and Shenandoah arranged by Erb.

A free-will offering will be taken to support music scholarships.
