Hanson Tabbed To Guide Defender Volleyball

December 20, 2010

(Monday, December 20; Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt College athletic director Glenn Bouma has announced Chad Hanson as the new head coach of the Dordt College volleyball program.

“It is our pleasure to welcome Chad Hanson, the next Dordt College head volleyball coach,” said Dordt College Athletic Director Glenn Bouma.

Hanson recently completed his third season at the University of Georgia where he served as an assistant coach in 2008 and 2009 and the majority of the 2010 season. Hanson was named the interim head coach of the program in early November and guided the Bulldogs to a 4-3 record in the final weeks of the season. Georgia was 49-45 during Hanson’s three seasons in Athens, Georgia.

Prior to his time at Georgia, Hanson served in a similar role at the University of Iowa. Hanson has coached AAU teams and his collegiate coaching stops also include volunteer time at the University of Idaho and Washington State University where he worked extensively with scout teams. From 2001-2003 Hanson was the head coach at Colton High School (Washington).

“Chad brings a variety of volleyball experiences that will help our program. Chad has a great knowledge of volleyball and he also exhibits a Christian coaching perspective—something we feel is essential to maintain. We are thankful that he will be joining the Athletic Department,” said Bouma.

Hanson played collegiately for two seasons at the University of California-Irvine before finishing his career at Washington State with the club team where his team finished as the Bronze Medalists a the NIRSA National Division I Championships.

Hanson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from Washington State University in 2000, and he became a Certified Athletic Trainer in 2001.

“We don’t need to rebuild anything here,” said Hanson. “Coach Van Den Bosch has helped to develop a strong tradition I will work to maintain. The program is in great condition.”

Chad and his wife Karla have two daughters, Piper and Ava.

Tom Van Den Bosch, longtime head volleyball coach at Dordt College, announced the 2010 volleyball season would be his last as coach at Dordt College. He leaves the program with a 464-112 record in 14 seasons. Van Den Bosch will continue to work in the Dordt College Admissions Office.

“Dordt College is fortunate to have someone like Chad take over the volleyball program. I have heard nothing but praise about Chad from all the volleyball coaches I’ve been in contact with around the country,” said Van Den Bosch. “He will bring energy, experience and expertise to Dordt College volleyball.”
