Art department receives grant from Netherlands

The Dordt College department of art and design was awarded a $3,700 grant from the Consulate General of the Netherlands for partial funding of an exhibition and book publication of “Promising Land.”

The book is a photography project developed by photographer René Clement of New York, N.Y. After “stumbling upon” the unique Dutch hub that is Orange City, he was quickly fascinated. As a Dutch immigrant himself, he found the town and its history intriguing.

Out of this fascination and curiosity came the inspiration for his book, a series of portraits and landscapes featuring people in traditional Dutch attire. He hopes the project will share a story and express his experiences, obsessions, and fantasies.

An exhibit featuring Clement’s work will be on display at Dordt College from May to July 2011.
