Dordt College theater performance recognized for excellence
November 1, 2010The Secret Garden, the Dordt College theater arts department’s fall main stage show, is being “held for consideration” for performance in this year’s Region V Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) to be held in Ames in January.
The Secret Garden is the third Dordt College production since January to be considered for inclusion in this year’s festival. At each week-long festival, five to seven shows are showcased out of the twenty-plus productions from the region that judges decide might be worthy of honoring.
The Dordt College theater program has a history of being recognized by KCACTF. It has had at least one show held for consideration each of the past several years, with two held last year and three this year.
Director of this fall’s The Secret Garden, Professor April Hubbard, is grateful for the honor.
“It validates for students the quality of their work,” she says. She believes that it also helps prospective students see that although Dordt’s program is small compared to many of the large university programs against which it competes in the region, the level of quality is high.
“The fact that our program is recognized regularly is an indication of the fine students we have and the good work they do,” said Hubbard.
Hubbard especially enjoyed working with a cast of both college students and children in The Secret Garden.
“The children brought sense of enthusiasm and fun to the production that was contagious,” she said. “They added a sense of play that helped remind us that putting on a play is more than hard work, it’s a joyful creation.”
Hubbard will find out in mid-December whether the department will be invited to perform The Secret Garden at the regional conference to be held the third week in January.
