Pulitzer winning photographer will share photos, tips

October 15, 2010

Mary Chind, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer from the Des Moines Register, will be at Dordt College this month to share stories and photos with students and the general public.

The public is invited to hear Chind speak on Thursday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Science and Technology Center lecture hall S-101. She will share a sampling of her work and speak about the future of photojournalism.

Dordt students are invited to a workshop with Chind on Thursday afternoon from 1 to 4:30 p.m., in which she will discuss characteristics of quality news photography. The workshop will be held in the Ribbens Academic Complex CL-2241.

Earlier this year, Chind won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography. The winning photo shows the dramatic rescue of a woman from the Des Moines River. In the photo, a construction worker dangled from a crane to reach Patricia Ralph-Neely from the swirling river water.

Her photo, first published in the Des Moines Register, was also widely published in newspapers and newsmagazines around the world.

Chind has worked at the Register since 1999. She grew up in rural Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Steven’s Point.
