Music, theater, and sports at Dordt College for Parents Weekend

  A music festival, theater production, and sporting events are all part of an exciting Parents Weekend at Dordt College being held Oct. 15 and 16.

Special events include the following:

The Theatre Arts Department fall production is the musical “The Secret Garden” Performances are October 14, 16, 20, 21, 22, and 23 at 7:30 p.m., at the Te Paske Theatre. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children. They may be purchased online at www.dordttickets.com or call the box office at (712) 722-6430.

The Music Department will present a Fall Music Festival Friday evening, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium, with most of the college’s instrumental and choral groups participating. Dordt’s Jazz Band will perform Saturday noon in the Campus Center, and an organ recital will be offered Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium, featuring MaryLou Wielenga, Orange City, and Dordt College organ students. All of these events are free and open to the public.

In Friday sports action, the Dordt Blades will meet Colorado State at 7:30 p.m. in the All Seasons Center hockey rink. “Late Night with the Defenders” will close out Friday night sports action, with an inter-squad women and men’s basketball scrimmage, half-time entertainment, and more, beginning at 10:30 p.m. in the De Witt Gymnasium.

A Kuyper Apartments dedication will take place Saturday at 10:15 a.m. in the Kuyper Apartments, new student housing on campus. The building’s architect and his wife will be in town for the celebration.

A Dordt College Prairie dedication will take place Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Science Building lecture hall S101. An optional prairie walk will be offered afterwards, led by prairie curator Dr. Robb De Haan.

The Goheen Gallop is also Saturday at 11 a.m., beginning in the All Season's Center parking lot. Registration for this 5K fun run begins at 9:30 a.m. There will be a $10 race fee, a free t-shirt for all participants, and door prizes from local businesses. Proceeds will benefit the work of a Dordt alumnus and agricultural missionary in Africa, Dea Lieu.

Saturday afternoon sports action includes a 1 p.m. football game between the Defenders and Northwestern; women’s and men’s soccer matches with North Central University at 2 and 4 p.m.; a lacross game at Sioux Center’s community soccer fields (north of the football field) at 4 p.m.; and a second Blades hockey match at 4:15 p.m. in the All Seasons Center.

Parents Weekend concludes with an 8:30 p.m. Praise and Worship service at the Campus Center, followed by complimentary ice cream served in the commons from 9-10:30 p.m.

The Fall Music Festival at Dordt College on Friday, Oct. 15, will feature a mass vocal choir selection presented by the Concert Choir, Chorale, and Women’s Chorus. This concert also includes instrumental groups at Dordt, and is free and open to the public.
