Children invited to audition for Dordt's production of 'The Secret Garden'

August 4, 2010

The musical “The Secret Garden” will be presented by the Dordt College Theatre Arts Department this fall.

Children ages 8-12 with singing and acting skills are invited to audition for parts in this extraordinary production. Auditions will be held Thursday, Aug. 19, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Dordt’s choir room, located on the south end of the B. J. Haan Auditorium.

At the auditions, children will be asked to learn and perform a few measures of music from the show, sing a well-known children’s song, read a few lines from the script, and perform a few dance steps. Auditions will be conducted by April Hubbard, director and theatre arts professor at Dordt, and Dr. Benjamin Kornelis, musical director and professor of music at Dordt.

“The Secret Garden” is based on the beloved children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It is the journey of a young orphan, Mary Lenox, who experiences healing, hope, and renewal while tending a forgotten garden. The book and lyrics are by Pulitzer Prize winner Marsha Norman and music is by Lucy Simon.

The show will be presented at the Te Paske Theatre on October 14, 16, and Oct. 20-23, with each performance beginning at 7:30 p.m. A matinee will be offered Saturday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m.
