Dordt College has new director of marketing and public relations

ASonya Jongsma Knauss new Director of Marketing and Public Relations has taken the helm at Dordt College.

Sonya Jongsma Knauss assumed her new duties in Dordt’s Advancement office on July 22. Jongsma Knauss will direct and oversee media relations, advertising, promotional publications, and marketing efforts conducted by the college.

Jongsma Knauss is a Dordt alumna, graduating from the college in 1997 with a major in English and a minor in political science. She went on to receive her Master’s degree in 1999 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in journalism and mass communication.

She was employed at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, serving on the editorial board for that news organization for two years. More recently, Jongsma Knauss was editor and general manager for MilwaukeeMoms.com, a division of Journal Interactive and a branch of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

“We are excited to have a person with Sonya’s expertise overseeing marketing and public relations at Dordt,” noted John Baas, Vice President of Advancement. “Her extensive experience in writing, social media, website organization and design, and editing will be a valuable asset to the college.”

Jongsma Knauss has been a board member for the Milwaukee Press Club, a member of the Milwaukee Forum, and a host and moderator for the Fourth Street Forum, a live televised panel discussion on current events and public policy in the city of Milwaukee. She was also responsible for publicizing and promoting publications via television, radio, and social media.

“I’m excited to use what I’ve learned in a variety of news media roles to help get the word out about Dordt College,” she said. “In a world with increasingly diverse communications options, I’m looking forward to working with others here to develop new and dynamic ways to communicate the mission and vision of Dordt College.”

Jongsma Knauss noted that she’s enjoying being back in the Sioux Center community. Her parents, Calvin and Sally Jongsma, are also employed at Dordt in the roles of professor of mathematics and editor of The Voice (a Dordt news publication).

Sonya and her husband, Dan, have four children: Anneke (11); Claire (9); Maddy (5); and Kate (4).
