New African America Mixed Blood Theatre play at Dordt Feb. 10

Mixed Blood Theatre Company’s premiere production of African America, a new play about the changing landscape of modern African communities, will be presented at Dordt College’s Science and Technology Center, SB101, on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m.

This 50-minute theatrical production is sponsored by Dordt’s Co-curricular Committee. The performance is free and members of the community are encouraged to attend.

As the title suggests, one need not go to Africa to find out about African culture. New African immigrants are increasingly part of everyday life in North America. In this performance, the unexpected appearance of a near-magical “pan-African” man leads a very modern biracial couple to a better understanding and appreciation of the modern African diaspora and the immigrant experience, particularly that of recent arrivals from Liberia, Ethiopia, and Somalia. The experience leads the performers and audience to consider the greater topics of how to connect with and celebrate one’s heritage and homeland.

African America is produced by the Mixed Blood Theatre Company from its home in a century-old Minneapolis fire station. Founded in 1976 and dedicated to the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream, Mixed Blood is a multi racial professional company promoting cultural pluralism, individual equality, and artistic excellence.
