Dr. Lauren Winner's Feb. 1st visit cancelled

January 18, 2010

Winner

Dr. Winner's lectures scheduled for Monday, February 1st have been cancelled due to weather conditions on the East Coast.

The author of a memoir about growing up Jewish and converting to Christianity will discuss “The Relationship between Christianity and Judaism” at Dordt College on Monday, February 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Science and Technology Center Lecture Hall SB101. The public is welcome to attend.

Guest speaker Lauren Winner is a professor of Christian Spirituality at Duke Divinity School and the author of three books, Girl Meets God, Mudhouse Sabbath, and Real Sex: The Naked Truth about Chastity.

Girl Meets God is Winner’s personal account of having a Reform Jewish father, a “lapsed Southern Baptist” mother, and growing up as a Jew in the South. She converted to Orthodox Judaism in high school, and later converted to evangelical Christianity as a graduate student in England. In a subsequent book, Mudhouse Sabbath, Winner discusses many of the Jewish traditions that she misses following her conversion to Christianity and what we can learn about time, rest, and Sabbath‑keeping from Judaism.

Her third book, Real Sex: The Naked Truth about Chastity, will serve as a basis for her First Mondays Speaker Series lecture at 11 a.m. on Monday in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. The topic for that address is “Lies the Church Tells About Sex.” This lecture is also open to the public.

Winner has degrees from Duke, Columbia, and Cambridge universities, and holds a Ph.D. in history. She has appeared on PBS’s Religion & Ethics Newsweekly and has written for The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post Book World, Publishers Weekly, Books and Culture, Christianity Today, and was previously a book editor for Beliefnet. She travels extensively to lecture and teach.

Winner’s appearance at Dordt is part of the First Mondays Speaker Series, which is designed to enrich the academic experience of students, faculty, and staff and to create an engaging learning experience for all who live in the area community.

A core function of Dordt College is to prepare Christians with biblical insight for service in God’s kingdom. This year’s speaker series is bringing to Dordt’s campus thinkers, writers, and opinion-leaders who are actively engaging the world from a biblical perspective. Listeners are being challenged to expand discussions, grow in understanding, and act boldly and creatively in serving God.
