Math and the Christian faith topic of October 8 guest speaker

October 1, 2009

Dr. Robert Brabenec, a math professor at Wheaton College, will present an afternoon and evening lecture at Dordt College on Thursday, Oct. 8. Both are open to the public and will be held in the science building lecture hall SB108.

Brabenec will speak on the topic, “The Axiomatic Method” at 3 p.m. His 7 p.m. topic is, “Beginning to understand Cantor’s Theory of the Infinite.”
Both lectures integrate faith, learning and the witness of Christians with the larger mathematical community. Brabenec will discuss the creational structure of mathematics and demonstrate how a part of mathematics unfolded over time.

Brabenec earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Ohio State University and has published two text books, the most recent being “Resources for the Study of Real Analysis.” He founded and has served as the executive secretary of the Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences (ACMS). ACMS seeks to help Christian mathematicians serve as a witness in the larger mathematical community.
